They are officially obsolete. How many people still need them? There are some forsale on eBay and other places. I was thinking about buying in bulk from some folks. Post up with the quantity you want. They would be around $2.50 each shipped.

Anyone game?

Well I was just searching and thinking about not doing this and instead building an adapter board similar to the moates chip extender that uses the SST 27SF020 with the appropriate switches and indications to allow for these chips to work instead. This will allow you to easily switch between 16 calibrations.

Thoughts?

Looks like I bought my 6 from Mouser just in time before they stopped carrying them-

(gloat gloat)

Be carefull with those chips from Ebay, lots of times they sell used 27sf512 chips...bleh. I've found that you can only re-use them so many times, some chips die faster than others too. I've had anywhere from 3 to 20+ erases and re-burns.

BTW... the guy on eBay doesn't even have the 27SF512 EEPROMs in his possession. He has to order them and his supply is running low. I have sent an e-mail to MCUMall to ask them about bulk purchasing / group buy.

Thanks,

16 cals is only for a LM.... 8 cals for a SMEC or a SBEC with chris gangls adapter board required to use the standard eeprom on a SBEC.

the design would also need to be different for the smec and sbec cause the 32kb bin size. the counter programming would be different.

for the LM, you would use the 4 bit binary counter on address pins A14, A15, A16 and A17 to change the location that the LM would read. each binary step (0000, 0001, 0010, 0011, 0100 etc) swaps to the next bin file, a step of 16kbyte.

for the SMEC, the bin size is 32k so the counter would have to skip every other state to jump from 32kbyte section to another... like this 0000, 0010, 0100, 0110, 1000, 1010, 1100, 1110. you only need a 3 bit binary counter cause A14 will always be held low. you could use the 4 bit binary counter but the most significant bit could be tied to the "clear" pin so it resets itself when it counts higher than 7. the other three pins will need to be shifted to the left one bit with the LSB held low.

both would still need the debounced switch, a 7408 AND gate (4 on one chip), some pull down resistors for the address lines, and a little bit of circuitry to make sure the appropriate pins still attach to the 28 pin socket correctly... basically everything but address pins A14-A17.

i dont see why it wouldnt work. the willem programmers burn these chips as well.

Aries_Turbo

yeah they work in a LM and a SMEC.

if you get chris gangl's adapter, they work in a SBEC.

I wonder why they became obsolete? So many people were still using them, I know it's a popular chip for Honda's too. Weird.

Aries_Turbo

they dont get used anywhere near as much as a newer memory chip that generates much higher revenue for the company. its a niche item like a TU 3" swingvalve.

With all this talk about the chips becoming obsolete for our cars, what options are we going to have once the supply is gone? Is it going to be back to only stock stuff or stand alone or is there a way to run other chips that are available? I'm specifically talking about the SBEC/SMEC...

We have other options. You can go with a standard Eprom, the 27C256. The Chips are cheaper but they are a once and done chip, no erase and re-burn.
