I turned my car to the 'on' possition and right away the alt. started smoking. The car wasent running or anything. I had to move the car so I started it and moved it (I know bad idea) but it had to get done. Needless to say the alt is now dead.

What should I look at with this issue? The car is an 87 shelby z with a full 89 T2 harness converion. It wasent doing this befor I removed the harness. I didnt change anything on the harness when I removed it.

Thanks in advance.

Check you put the field wires on the field terminals and the large power wire to the stud. Check the powers and grounds at the SMEC, if its smoking, you have a dead short or the alt took a dump and shorted internally.

feedback from an internal short in the alternator i'd guess

I had a ground terminal break on the alternator of my Horizon one time. I guess the alternator was arching through the bracket. Caused one of the rubber bushings to catch fire.

Make sure the grounds are good . at the alt and the block

I would take that alternator to a auto electric shop and let them run it on a alternator tester.

Saw someone melt 2 alternators cause of bad grounds. Check to make sure yours are all set.
