View Full Version : SBEC Chip Converter Group Buy

quantum

Ok here is the group buy for the SBEC Chip Converter (discussed in this thread (http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35474)). This converter will allow you to use the same electronic erase chips the SMEC uses (AT29C256, 27SF512, etc) which saves the hastle/cost of UV erasing. This also allows the use of a chip emulator like the Ostrich (http://www.moates.net/product_info.php?cPath=50&products_id=169) in SBEC cars for real time tuning (It should also work in SBEC II cars, but I have not tested it. If you have a socketed SBEC II and are willing to test please PM me). There is also a open socket that will allow the use of M87C257 chips if you already have them and would like to use those along with electronic erase chips or an emulator.

Like most group buy's the more ordered the lower the price, but unlike most group buy's if I can get over a certian limit the time to get the order drops.

I need at least 10 orders to start. The price for 10-30 orders is ~$35 and lead time is about 1-1.5 months. If I can get over 30 the lead time drops down to 2-3 weeks. Also with 30-90 the price drop down to ~$33. If by some miracle more than 90 people are interested the price drops to ~$25. The prices shouldn't vary by more than $1 and I didn't include shipping in that price (it's small and light, shipping shouldn't be much).

I'm not sure about a deposit yet; I'm talking with Turbos Unleashed about having them on their site. It all really depends on responce.

Please post only if you are ready to purchase one. First person please start a list. (eg; post "1. :your username:", next person 2, etc)

Thank you.

I already have an ostrich and i pretty much ruined my chip socketing my SBEC so my car is just sitting now. I hope we can get some people on this...would like that lead time to go down a little.

Anyways, i really don't wanna buy a burner, chips and eraser and all that stuff to get my car running again so i'm willing to pay more if need be....

Thanks!

I'm interested, but hesitnated. I have 5 SBEC eproms and a UV eraser already.

Before I lay out more money on chips and parts, I'd like to know and understand how a Ostrich will work for me.

You can change your cal on the fly or for me, I just change my cal at home and at work on my computers, I drive it home, tweak it, then note the change, tweak and drive home again after work. Awesome unit. :thumb:

And you can tweak from the drivers seat rather than pulling the SBEC, opening it up, and replacing the chip each time you swap cals. Now that ive got the convertor, I need to save up some doh for the ostrich!

You don't have to open the case if you get the chip extender, which ironically, uses the same cable as the Ostrich,

It helps put us on equal footing with the smec-ers.... I believe it to be a better option then rewiring to a smec.

The min order to get them quickly is around $550. So far I have 6 People if I include you who commited to buy (at $35). That means everyone would need to pay out about $92. If everyone is ok with that and will pay a deposit I'll order them. If that doesn't happen I'll order from the slower cheaper place Monday so those who want them now will not have to wait more than necessary.

I ordered the first batch of boards. Cost is $35 + $6 for shipping for a $41 total; please send payment to quantum_kid@hotmail.com through paypal or PM me if you need my mailing address. Please make sure you include your address.

Also, was anyone planning on using the socket for the current 87C257 chips? If not and you just want it for the electronic erase and Ostrich ability please post here or put it in your order. If no one is going to use that on the board (It really isn't necessary, if you have a socketed SBEC you can just remove the board and put a 87C257 chip in) I may remove it. Thanks everyone.

So after we are done with the Ostrich, i can burn a 87C257, or what's the deal?

I'll have you paid by the end of the week, :thumb:

The 87C257 is the chip socketed SBEC's natively use. With this converter plugged into the socket you can use a 27C256 electronic erase chips or the Ostrich. I can build the converter with an extra socket which should allow the use of 87C257 chips with out removing the converter or I can leave it out and you would just need to remove the converter to use the 87C257 chips. It's really six of one or a half dozen of another. The reason I am debating not having the extra socket is because it is much harder to solder and the extra socket isn't ZIF so you would most likely need to remove the converter to put in a 87C257 chip and then you may as well use the socket on the SBEC. So in the end the extra socket is superfluous and that is why I am going back and forth about including it.

Don't need the extra socket then if it's that much of a deal.

Hey,

http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37541

Thanks!

I hope I didn't miss a solder on your or Sloride's. There is one part that was a bit hard to do so it is possible.

Here is a quick how to test:

Using a multimeter test for resistance between the following pins:

Pin Header , Latch, Socket
1 , 11 ,
2 , , 2
3 , 9 ,
4 , 8 ,
5 , 7 ,
6 , 6 ,
7 , 5 ,
8 , 4 ,
9 , 3 ,
10 , 2 ,
11 , , 11
12 , , 12
13 , , 13
14 ,1+10, 14
15 , , 15
16 , , 16
17 , , 17
18 , , 18
19 , , 19
20 , , 20
21 , , 21
22 , , 22
23 , , 23
24 , , 24
25 , , 25
26 , , 26
27 , , 27
28 , 20 , 1+28
, 12 , 3
, 13 , 4
, 14 , 5
, 15 , 6
, 16 , 7
, 17 , 8
, 18 , 9
, 19 , 10

Pin one for the pin header and the socket is in the upper right for both (looking down at the top), pin one for the latch is in the lower left. Pins count up going down the row from pin one and then switch sides and go up the opposite direction (1-10 on one side and then opposite 10 is 11 and count up to 20 on the other).

Honestly I hope I didn't miss a solder, but if I did please mail it back and I will fix it. The next time I order these I think I'm going to remove that tricky solder joint.

Edit: Looks like all my formating was removed in the post. If you don't understand the list above PM me your email address and I will send it seperatly.

Does your sbec work with old chips just in the socket? I don't have any uv chips to burn to to check my sbec.

hmm anybody have a chip you could burn a 90/91 2.5 turbo cal to and send me? I'll pay for cost of chip/shipping.

Yeah, I could, PM me the details.

My Issues have been completely resolved.... By Far the best customer service I have ever experienced on the boards < no pun intended >

Chris, You ROCK

ps. If your ostrich doesn't seem to be working and your converter checks out, make sure the two little switches on the side are toward the usb connector.

Just got back from road test.
With 20 psi stock injector/3 bar cal was at 50MPH in no time and hit a speed bump with the following result:

Got mine from Chris a week ago, works perfect! Now all I need is the extender cable from Moates and I don't have to remove the SBEC to change the chip.

Yeah, I'm pretty much out of the game for now. I just don't have time between family, work, and school. Rob's a great guy and his converter is smaller and most likely better soldered than mine (I never was good with the soldering iron).

Rob if your interested in my schematics for the realtime cal switch with the plcc chips and let me know (PM). The design is sound I just cant solder well enough to make a consistent good version (I have made a couple, and the plcc works with switching on the fly) and I would rather see the design used then sit on the shelf. I know your doing the burnable computers, but this may be a good cheap option for others.

I'm a little farther away now. I moved a few years ago. We're just north of Ann Arbor now.

It shouldn't be a problem. The padded mailers I use are only about $0.25 more to go to Canada than the US. Though, I send them 'airmail' - it usually takes 2-3 weeks to get there. I guess they walk it over or something, lol.

Why didnt you tell me you sell this when i bought the inyectors/PB and stuff :(

Sounds very interesting, can you make a cable that gets into the cabin so people can erase with a willem the chip to avoid the car being stolen? I dont know if TM's get stolen on USA, but in mexico, is everydays story.
