I talked to Paul at Race-mart.com which is where I ordered from as they were cheaper than from CSR directly. Paul and Rowland (from CSR) are friends. Paul told me that he is going to see Rowland this weekend in Orlando at the points race...and will ask him when production is to start on the pumps.

I don't know anything about a group buy. I never meant for the thread to take that direction (not to say a group buy isn't possible). My angle on this was that they are going to be making another batch but I don't know when. Reeves and I talked about it and thought that one problem was that most don't even know this parts exists for our cars...so Reeves started a thread to bring awareness to the masses.

From what I can tell...if you want one than now would be the time to buy. They move rather slow so who knows if this could be the last run or just the last run for awhile?

The points race isn't this weekend but the following, I'll be down there if you want, see if they want to speak with someone face to face and I'll be happy to speak with them while I'm down there. :thumb:

I have talked directly to CSR, and specifically about a 'group buy' discussing both 'quantity' and 'discount' ... Race-Mart is only $3 less than CSR's MSRP, I am sure i can get us a better deal. If not, no group buy.

Are they rebuildable if anything should go wrong with them?

supercrackerbox
02-27-2009, 02:07 AM
Personally at my level, this isn't high on my list of future upgrades, but the price could change my mind.

Just two questions: I don't see where/if it specifies what year this fits- I'm currently running the factory L-body water pump housing- Would I need to change?

And also, would an alternator/battery upgrade be required?

BadAssPerformance
02-27-2009, 02:49 AM
CSR website specifies the early pump (pre '89) differences discussed here (http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28198&highlight=water+pump+difference)

Alternator/battery upgrade not required, but that is based on a stock OEM parts, not a lawn & garden battery fo rexample might be trial and error.

I understand that they are rebuildable and the electric motor is recomeneded to be changed at 50k miles.

Excellent, that would be a bolt in for me then.

I'm actually running a battery spec'd for Harley rated at 146 CCA, but yeah, basically a lawn & garden. The alternator is factory for an '86 Daytona, I don't remember how many amps it pushes.

Hopefully it will be a long while before I have 50k on the Charger. ;)

The verbage is actually incorrect on the pump listing...or should I say misleading. 89 and earlier means "late model" not what you guys are thinking or what I initially thought. The guys with non common block motors will just ahve to switch to a common block housing...no biggie.

BadAssPerformance
02-27-2009, 06:04 PM
'89+ it is then...

The CB water pump fits an older engine easier than an older WP fits a CB anyways.

True dat! You just have to watch out for pulley alignment....but with an electric pump, no problem!

Electric water pump FTW!

ok thanks for the clarification. So I'll still say 'yes' to getting one at this time

Now to figure out.....do I leave my cb water pump housing painted black, or bling bling it like I planned on doing before I planned on an electric water pump?

JT, what colors are included in the group buy? I vote for back in black...

(and sorry, I haven't been home long enough to remember measuring that axle for you)

personally id opt for the older pre CB housing. what good is 35gph of flow through that tiny little hole??

if this is for people who are looking for the most out of their cars, then they most likely have a ported water pump housing on there, and the pre CB housing can be ported and smoothed out ALOT nicer then the CB housing.

I thought the pumps were all the same...but after reading this thread i guess i was wrong.

curious to see what kind of group guy discount there is!!! it would be cool to have my only belt on the car, just turning the alternator

BadAssPerformance

I agree the pre-CB pump works better, but if this is our only option, so be it.

I never port my waterpump. I figure it leaves more flow to the #4 mod! LOL.

Since they sent me thru the distributor, all that has been offered so far is 5% if we get a min of 10... I will try to see if they will do that for forum members directly as 5% wont even cover extra shipping cost of a 'group buy'...

snoman

One of our distributors is a CSR distributor. So we can get them at a discounted price. So, I called my distributor...he couldn't find the PN in his system to quote me. Then I called CSR, and the tech there named David told me that they quit making them over a year ago and have been discontinued with no plans to make them again, and they have none in stock. I have checked their 2 largest distriubtors Jegs and Summit, neither show that part number. If you know of a distributor that actually has them in stock, I would highly recommend getting one now regardless of the price. I bought one for James a few years ago, and he has been very happy with it. But if by some chance you get CSR to make more, I can see what my distrubitor would be willing to do on price.
Later,
Cindy

I'm glad to hear they're making them.
I would have hoped in this economy there couldn't be too many people breaking down the door for water pumps.

But, this group buy is for a direct fit replacement for the stocker.

Do you have any idea when the pumps might be ready for install? I'm in no hurry, but asking to see if I should stick with my old pump for now, or hold off until I get the new shiney electric pump.

They were paid in full yesterday, so the wait will be 4-8 weeks. Some of you wanted colors. After talking with Paul, he suggested just going with clear anodized. He HIGHLY recommend not getting red as they were having issues with getting the color right, and sometimes the colored anodizing changes color over time, but the clear would stay nice and shiney forever. SO I plan to get all in clear, BUT if anyone wants another color I MUST KNOW by Friday!
All Canadian orders will be shipped via USPS, and US orders will be shipped using FEDEX.

From Paul Fink ar Racemart:

"They have pulled all of the drawings, ordered the material and are in the process of nailing down a firm production date. The one problem they ran across was since they haven't made them in such a long period of time, they have to re-write the CNC program based on the drawings. The initial ETA as of right now is 90 days. They have promised to give me a firm commitment date by the end of the week"

Does anyone that is getting these pumps still want the timing belt cover tapped hole?

I'd rather not have the hole in the pump (don't run a timing cover) and don't want the chance for it to leak.

If no one else wants it, maybe we could get it removed?

I'm running the late model backwards pump now, so I suspect I can use the same belt and just tighten the alternator a little.

I plan to run a relay with a spare switch I already have mounted toggling it, then from the relay to the pump direct. Don't think I need a controller.

??

I said I'm running the late model (newer) water pump that is reverse rotation (compared to the older pumps). The belt just rubs this pulley.....it doesn't go around it like the old style. It will be very little slack to take up.

Here is how I wired mine up.
http://www.shelbymopar.com/gallerybuilder/galleries/Almost%20done/schematic.jpg

A word to the wise on these, it might have been a one off but check it out. Before I left for Mopar Nats I was driving around and it overheated. I checked the fuse and it was fine, went out and wiggled the wires and saw blue sparks. They send you a pump with a plug, then about six inches of wires out of the plug for you to splice to. My connections were fine, it was their connections that came loose. I used a real small screwdriver to release the pen then pulled it out of the plug. They are crimped in two places, one on the wires and the other on the insulation. They had missed the insulation and had a bad crimp on the wires. I pryed the crimp open, re skinned the wire put it back in crimped and soldered it. Good to go now. The other small issue I had was the impeller hitting the housing, I am pretty sure it was because I had the housing powdercoated and messed up the clearance. I worked the fines down a bit with a file and cleaned the powdercoat out of the housing. Might not be a bad idea to check it just to make sure. You can go through the bottom hose hole with a scribe and turn the wheel after it is installed. As far as the under drive pully goes I am running the same belt that I was before (with stock wp) and it is fine, you can take the slack up. Hope this helps guys, have about 5K miles and love mine so far.

I got my invoice from Paul Fink at RaceMart today. I originally ordered from him and was not in on the group buy...so the rest of you should be getting them soon.

Thanks to everyone that was in on the group buy. I would not have been able to get mine if it were not for you guys with the additional orders to allow production :thumb:

lol ya man im sure he knows that....i just dont know what hes trying to get at :confused2:

i said accessory....the cam and distributor are required to run the motor. where as the water pump/alternator etc are not. meaning they are accessories as they are not needed to run the motor.

LOL, you got me with the accessory part. I was just trying to jerk your chain...

The only accessory I will have after the e-water pump will be the alternator as well.

Although the intermediate shaft is also sometimes called the auxillary shaft....and you don't HAVE to have a distributor to run the engine (DIS)...lol.

lol i thought u were just diiickin around :p
i just realized what u said bout the water pumps. when u said later style i thought OLDER style lol....ya i would believe anyone running a CB pump that there wont be any change in belt size.
what is the # for your UD pulley belt??? Ill be running a sweet one i got from Alan last year, it has no a/c or power steering grooves

so can i get some info on how too make my 8 valve DIS :D

ohhhh ya....for UD pulley install on a CB motor....do u have to grind for clearance like you would have too on a older block??

yes you have to grind the snow gaurd down. I can't believe you haven't put that thing on yet. Those poor accesories spinning that fast. I just put a UDP on my 2.2 automatic. Boy what a difference. It's like I dropped a 2.5 in it. Seriously. It didn't make that much difference on my 2.5 5spd but the Automatic OMG. I also have been getting about about 3MPG better out of it. Need to run some more miles to make sure but so far that's what I'm seeing. Amazing how spinning those accessories that much slower makes a difference. Course it won't make much diff if all your spinning in the Alt :)

I think Cindy deserves a round of applause for handling this group buy for us...near as I can tell she did the shipping and coordinating of most of the deal and didn't make a dime off this ( or very little).

For the guff she and James sometimes take from impatient customers waiting for custom items (cals, etc.), to step up and handle this for a token fee, if any, shows how dedicated they are to serving their quite small customer base...all of us.
I myself am a small business owner doing custom work for people, and I know how hard it is to deal with customers on a day-to-day basis, and stay focused on keeping them happy and willing to return. In all their dealings with unhappy customers, publicly at least, they've always done their best to satisfy the customer, when it would be soooo much more satisfying personally to tell someone to go pound sand, or whatever.
Personally, everything I have ordered from FWD Performance has been shipped promptly, correctly, and reasonably priced, which is more than I can say for my business suppliers that I spend a TON of money with every year.
Way to go, Cindy and James.

Was just cleaning in the garage and found this. Keep in mind I am running the FM underdrive pulley, not sure if there are any differences between theirs and the others. When I did away with the stock water pump I ran the same belt and it is just fine in length. All belts are made by Gates.

It will have a good home on MeanMini.
Thanks.

Its tough to find and sort through info on how these worked out for folks.
Paul recommended removing the thermostat. What did folks do? With the 4th cyl cooling mod, there should be enough flow to prevent the electric
water pump from cavitation?

Reeves you got 127 pages of awesome in your build thread, and i'm still looking for your comments and experiences with the CSR pump...

My experiences weren't that good. It seemed to cool fine, and also was awesome to use in the pits, but it was short lived twice. Burned up the first time after 1 season (including a drag week) and I paid to have it rebuilt (which was very good price though). Burned up again after another season and this time they rebuilt under warranty. I have been afraid to reinstall it, as both times I was at the track when it died.

We need to hear from others as well, with their experience.

James, did they (or you) identify a root cause of the failures?

Also can't remember where i was reading it!
