hey everyone, a new road course has opened up here in Orlando right next to where i live (like 3 miles away). i'm kind of excited about it, not really sure what to expect though. they have training courses they offer: beginner, intermediate and advanced. i think i'm going to sign up for the beginner and see what it's like. i've never had the car on a track before and i think it will be fun :) i need to get me a helmet, any one have a good source for affordable helmets? i accept that you can't put a price on safety, but i also believe that i don't need to spend $700 to protect my head :)

You can get them for $100 or even less, just make sure they have the latest certification tag. A motorcycle helmet is not "legal" for car use.

MAybe not road course, but for most NHRA use it is. Just has to have a SNELL2000 rating. after next year you'll need a SNELL2005.:thumb:

Like John said a motorcycle helmet, which carries the SNELL ratings may not be legal for auto-x/road racing. Verify it first. :thumb:

well, i want to get a legitimate racing helmet - i have a suspicion that once i do the track i'm going to get hooked and i'm going to want to go back. and since i don't want to die or break any rules, i'll get a "real" helmet. i just need to try to find one that's reasonably affordable ;)

A fully legal open faced current model Pyrotect like I bought last year from Summit was about $150. If you don't know your head size or which style fits the shape of your noggin, you should go to try them on somewhere. Most motorcylce helmets (unless it's a POS Bieffe) start at twice that. My current Arai full face was over $400. so the open face automotive style helmets are a better deal for what you want to do with it.

I went shopping for a new helmet last year. I ended up paying about $150 for a G-Force SA-2005 helmet. While there were a number of places that had the helmet at that price, DiscoveryParts.com (http://www.discoveryparts.com/cgi-bin/store/commerce.cgi?cart_id=1236010598.270&page=Helmets.htm) had free shipping and included a free helmet bag also. I got it in two days, so their service was prompt.

Helmets listed as Snell M2005 are motorcycle helmets, those listed as Snell SA-2005 are sports auto or road race approved. I bought this (http://www.discoveryparts.com/cgi-bin/store/commerce.cgi?cart_id=1236010598.270&product=helmets_gforce&pid=9) helmet. You can use a tape measure to measure your head to find your sizing, just click on the Sizing Chart tab.
