Hey guys, I'm looking to get my 89 j-body around the 300whp mark. What would be the best way to go about this? It's going to be my daily driver so I would like it to be reliable and not to harsh mpg wise. What I have to start with are two complete 2.5 TI motors. One in the lebaron with 235 000ish km on it and one in my current DD (89 intercooled shadow g-valved to 14psi) with 170 000km on it and no ticks or knocks what so ever. What I have been thinking so far is to build up (starting with maintenance stuff) the lower mileage 2.5 with a S60,+40's,AFPR,decent FMIC,walbro 255 pump, and run 18psi with a wide band of course.Would that get me close?Would the 2.5 internals hold up? Or would I be better off finding a decent TII motor. Also like alot of people that are into these cars my budget is an issue.I would appreciate any input or build ideas.

Thanks
Brendan

Your probably going to need a ported head and manifolds to get 300 whp on anything less than crazy boost!

250 more reasonable?

Your there with your setup, a stock 2.2 with a maxed out Garrett can hit 250-260 whp. You might need more than 18 psi but in reality, a few more psi won't hurt.

A 2.5 with a good exhaust, S60 turbo, matching cal, will hit 300 whp. To help the engine live, get the head a mild port job with +1mm valves, ported exhaust manny and the number one upgrade, use FORGED pistons, don't skimp here.

Have the crank checked, rods redone with arps, port the oil pump hole, I would inspect the stock oil pump and reuse if ok, get it decked, some arp head studs and the usual machining.

250 is not even 'maxxed out' for a Garrett... at least on my 2.2L T-II Shadow

20psi boost
42lb/hr injectors
cold air intake
3" exhaust with no cat and straight thru muffler

Stock block, head, intake, exhaust, turbo, intercooler, etc, etc...

Now with that said, it will be easier to make 250hp with a good head, etc.

Those engines are both higher miles, might want to try to find something a little less used if you're looking for more reliability.

What did you dyno????????

We've gone thru this before, lol, not many have gone much past 250 on a stocker. If so, proof??? :eyebrows:

12.89 @ 104.5 mph in a 2850# race weight... maybe only 240whp?
