Pretty easy conversion.

Block off plate for the rod hole, drill holes for shifter, drill holes for the cable then you're set. :)

Bending the heatshield was the toughest part. :(

Do the cables sit under the cup holder/cubby...or do they go right through?

Under. No need cutting ANY plastic at all. Just the carpet and the sheet metal. :)

Though, the stock fastening bracket/stuff for the lower part of cubby is not there anymore. I'll have to find a way to secure everything later.

The trick is to cut the center out of the mounting bracket and leave the sides attached to the floor. The shifter goes under it, then you can screw down the cross piece that holds the console in place.;)

Nice, I'll try that this weekend.

Is it possible to move the shifter back farther? Or does it have the be pushed forward that far to clear the plastic?

The rubber boot doesn't look happy in this photo. My shifter is currently mounted too far back for the plastic to cover it. I'm trying to decide if I should modify the plastic or move the shifter up. Your positioning with a new leather boot might be a nice alternative.

He also has a A555/A520 shifter.

I have a A586/A523 shifter. I am happy how my shifter is setup, I just need to find a boot and mount the plastick stuff so they won't move.

Kevin, for some reason I was thinking you had the later shifter installed so that the cables were entirely under the car? Maybe it was somebody else.

if your going the 523/568 route like I did , I suggest using a 1st gen neon shifter. The bottom is flat compared to the P body shifter and is a much better fit

If you dont notice the shift pattern on the knob you would never know that it has the newer shift pattern, looks completley stock

I am going to turn the boot around. If I had it to do over again, I'd try to move the shifter back about an inch. It might still fit under the shifter box that way.

I tried it under the car at one time. It worked but my bigger exhaust came too close.

Kevin- I mounted mine an inch back like you said and it worked out well. I'm using a 523 shifter/knob/boot from a Daytona. My rubber boot was so hammered I ended up removing the rubber from the rectangular metal piece that the boot is attached to, then modifed the vinyl/leatherette boot to fit around it just right and put it back together.

EDIT: The last pic shows the car in first gear as a comparison to Kevin's.

Thanks! There are other pics in the 'what have you done to your car' thread in the lounge.
