View Full Version : Paint my car!

The 86 c/s is red. I hate red. I hate red with a passion.
The clear coat is failing, and there are plenty of stone chips and some surface rust that I must repair, so I figured, why go through the trouble of fixing it up in a color that Im not fond of.
Since my fiancee was none-to-happy that I bought ANOTHER car AND had to pay to get it shipped, I gave her free rein on the color (with exceptions of pink or purple)
We would like to see it in a SantaFe blue with silver GFX, R/T electric blue with silver GFX, and just for kicks Grabber Green with silver GFX and a black hood.

So bust out your best photoshop skills and paint my car! (thanks skibbe for the nice angle)

Wow, you bought Skibbe's car? Man, that was a nice car for a good price, one that I had considered purchasing...if I had a big storage building it would have been parked there :)

Could someone photoshop it in a nice burnt orange color too?

Congrats and good luck with it!

Limeny green is a tough one to pull off. You will really have to think it through if you decide to do it.

at least make it a quality job and remove trim, do the door/hatch jambs and engine compartment too if you can. Get something better than macco or one day cause thats about as long as they last.

I'm more about restoration than mods, I'm trying to restore my z's, not beat them up at a track. So I tend to be a stickler for keeping things original. The 86 came in flash red, gunmetal blue, radiant silver, white, and black. I'd say pick one of those colors. Black with the gold crab rims looks pretty sharp, and being black will not make all the t-top trim stand out so much.

Darkapollo

Well, as stated, I dont like red, so thats out.
She isnt fond of the gunmetal blue.
Im not a fan of white, though white 1g's are nice looking.
Black car with a black leather interior, might as well be Darth Vaders taxi...
Silver is just to bland of a color personally..

Im going to try my hand at it tonight as well.

Darkapollo
02-03-2009, 01:16 AM
The middle one for sure! BAP you da MAN!
If i ever make it out to an SDAC event ive got to shake your hand!

Darkapollo
02-03-2009, 01:47 AM
Actually I like the last one. (not the hooray for 80's pink) Though it kinda looks like the color on a 3rd gen Fbody LOL.
Just for kicks, can ya do the green with the black hood?

JohnnyIroc
02-03-2009, 01:48 AM

BadAssPerformance
02-03-2009, 01:51 AM

tommyturbo
02-03-2009, 01:53 AM
I'm not trying to be rude, cause I know everyone has an opinion...but I have to say some of these colors on the car I drooled over as a little kid and wanted so bad makes me very sad. The 86 turbo z is pretty darn hard to find in a nice unmolested shape anymore, heck they only made 7-8k of them, more than 3/4 are probably gone now. Why not keep the car a classy stock color, and not do something that just in my opinion doesn't look right on the car. It makes me think of all the hondas I see running around with unpainted body kits, and mismatched parts, it looks incomplete and imature. Go for something classy and refined.

JohnnyIroc
02-03-2009, 01:57 AM
i think when he gets done its going to look good and classy
not like some Honda with a fiberglass body kit
witch are known to not be driven as a dd cause they crack
and for show cars only cause its so fragile

JohnnyIroc
02-03-2009, 01:59 AM
and it does look much better black hood with silver gfx id stick with that!

Darkapollo
02-03-2009, 02:02 AM
the 5 colors that the CS came in, do not appeal to me. Thank you for your opinion, it is noted.
The engine wont be the stock lay out either. I have 99% of the parts to T2 it. Im sorry if it offends you that you think Im trying to ricersize my car by wanting to see it in a few different colors that appeal to me.

Thanks for the edits BAP! Sorry I couldnt come and pick up the car personally and meet you and Skibbe, however, if you ever wanted to make the trek to Cryslers at Carlisle, I will always be there.

+1 On the middle blue with silver gfx. As far as the black hood, it looks kinda "unfinished look" do you know what I mean? On the older Mopar Muscle it looked really good because of the styling in that era, but in later years it kinda faded away then it was brought back but not really thought out. Either way it's just an opinion and whatever you do, it's still a TD that's not crushed in the jy.

when i first looked at it i thought it was too much to look at
but its photo shopped its not finished
i had to think about it a minute to see how good its going to look

JohnnyIroc
02-03-2009, 11:07 AM
btw when you do paint it freshen up all the trim and louvers in flat black
that's what i am doing this spring
louvers come off real easy just leave the brackets on the window

Darkapollo
02-03-2009, 11:24 AM
I actually plan on doing it right. Im not going to rattle can it and hope for the best.
Since this is the last TD i will own for a while (so says the fiancee) Im going to do it right. IE pull out EVERY thing. And since my new place is already wired for 220v I can finally get my powder coating oven working.

JohnnyIroc
02-03-2009, 11:36 AM
sounds good
so are you taking the brackets off too
what you you going to use to put them back on cause i haven figured that one out yet

If you are not an experienced painter be careful spraying metalics and Pearls. If you do metalics or pearl use Base Clear. Chrysler Electric blue is Extremely transparent. Trust me I sprayed a 32 ford hotrod this color and I put 5 coats of base down and it was not enough. It came out great but unline some colors which you can get away with 2 coars of base it takes a lot more paint and is like a candy paint in which each coat can darken the color. If you decide to do the painting and prep yourself PM me and I can give you some tips and recomendations on paint (working on a budget).

This is good stuff. I love blue and silver, so that's my vote. If you go two tone with the gfx silver, I would stay away from a black hood though, too busy.

I was dreaming about a painting it black from the side molding down, and doing a silver stripe in between, kinda like a certain forum member's red/black GLHS. Red and black next to each other, on anything, look muddy, so they need to be separated with the silver stripe. How about that JT?

I repainted the fender and bumper to my srt elctric blue, it covered great. It was pretty well covered at 2 coats. I used PPG DBC. Just depends on the quality of the paint you use.

Wow, Im diggin that red/silver/black too.. and.. as stated.. i hate red.

The paint in the engine bay is in pretty good shape, and the red/silver/black keeps you from having to do the underhood and door jambs thing to change the car color... that's all I was thinking. Alan's car looks really good, and I don't usually like red either. ;-)

Hahaha, black will be easy, and I've got a big roll of silver vinyl and a vinyl plotter so we could even do the GLHS strobe stripe like Alan's ;-)

Darkapollo might get mad though.

while your painting it shave the antenna and third brake light and rear side marker lights for a cleaner look. i dont have photoshop but i do have this that my friend drew up. i have some different ideas for it but it still has the shelby theme. instead of the graphics for the stripes and shelby it will be painted on instead for a really clean look and same colors black and silver but like a mercedes looking metalic silver. dont mind the two different wheels we were deciding which wheels i will eventually go with.

what do you mean by safety inspection?

bgbmxer
02-06-2009, 12:30 PM
uhm,for one removing the high mount light will fail a pa safety inspection as well as the side marker lights.
Im not painting it to make it into some show car..

the rear side marker lights are noting more than reflectors on my car and if i recall 85's didnt even have the third brake light. and most people dont even know what are cars are let alone what lights they did or didnt have. my car will not be a show car either, it might only have one seat in it and will have a full role cage. but things like the antenna are easy to get rid off with a hidden antenna and subtle things like that that give it a better apperance. i have a friend inspect my car so the saftey stuff is not an issue and most of the laws have a grey area like exhaust for one mine comes out before the rear tire which is legal on a two door but not on a 4 door. sorry if i offened you but im just shooting out ideas while you have it sanded down.

Darkapollo
02-06-2009, 12:57 PM
Im not offended, the only thing i want to see 'shaved' is... anyway.
im just not a fan of that look thats all.

The issue with the 3rd break light is it was federal mandate that 86+ had a high mounted tail light. If i take the car to get it inspected with out that, it will fail.
The pa inspection laws have no 'gray' area. I use to do them. There are more ways to fail a car then most people know. The reason you can have your exhaust come out in front of the rear tire is because it is BEHIND the last open-able window into the passenger compartment.

@Johnmesich: We have 2 different inspections in PA, Emissions and Safety. Emissions consists of on OBD2 scans and seeing if all of the emissions stuff is still there (cat, air pump, egr, etc..) and safety consists of all of the mechanical parts and if they are still working. all doors have to open, all windows have to go up and down, all lights must work, horn, etc, brakes, tires, ball joints, etc, body rust (does it have sharp edges, does it lead into the pass. compartment, is it structural), my personal favorite is lifted and lowered vehicles. the bumper can be no less then 12'' from the ground (i have seen it at 8'' on an integra) and no HIGHER then 36'' (or 40?.. either way most of the lifted trucks in PA would fail, and I have failed them)

JohnnyIroc
02-06-2009, 01:04 PM
thank you for explaining it to me :thumb:
never knew anyone to go through safety
do you have to go there so often like emissions
or is it if you get reffed to go there by a cop you have to

Darkapollo
02-06-2009, 01:13 PM
its annual. safety and emissions are done at the same time.

JohnnyIroc
02-06-2009, 01:43 PM

and we dont have emissions for cars without on board computers
:partywoot:

BadAssPerformance

bgbmxer
02-08-2009, 11:37 AM
if the emissions and saftey laws are so strict my car would not pass. the egr has not been there for about a year now and if you put a newer turbo engine in they dont even have provisions for egr.
