A guy had a steering wheel done up exactly like that for sale back in November or so. Hopefully that just happened to be another steering wheel done in the same manner rather than being the one out of this car which may mean it got parted? :(

One clean ride right thurr.

IIRC the car was returned to stock. I'll ask Niel the next time he shows up on IRC #Shelby.

i missed that, you are right, then on page one he writes:

"Research on it shows it to be Invoice #102, which makes it actually the second 86 GLHS built (invoice numbers started with #101)....."

and we know looking at the prototype car in the early '86 magazine articles that car had "Intercooler" decals as well....so we need a Shelby expert to tell us when they changed to these decals "Intercooled"........was it on the 3rd car? the 4th?

I def. learned something about something since reading that article. The work done for the T4, PCV drain and 568 sure looked to be nice from the pictures shown. Looked very stock T2ish.

That's true it does look clean under the hood, I am suprised however they did not post any pics of the rebuilt motor or other parts that went inside. I also don't understand how they could sell such a rare car even after all the money they invested into it.

thats why i was curious, its such a well thought out car w/ lots of money spent on it i figured the new owner would show up to this group at some point.

routing PCV discharge oil to the turbo return line is one idea i plan to steal.

Stumbled onto this very old thread while looking for info on my old GLHS. Yes, I did have a silver R/T, and it now lives in Finland. I actually regret selling that car more than the GLHS. GLHS was a nice car, and I owned it a very long time. I used to miss it, but now I am doing a much higher end restoration on GLHS #432, and to be honest, I have had my fill of four door L-bodies :) GLHS #053 would be worth owning again for its history. I have talked with folks from Shelby, and they are not sure if #010 or #053 (or both) were in the pics for the original dealer brochures. #053 was built quite a ways before regular production took place on GLHS's. It has several small differences from other cars I have seen, such as wires and other pieces not fitting right (wires too long, and then taped back), and a few other oddities. The Intercooler decals (vs. Intercooled) were 100% for that car. When I bought the car, it had no decals on it, but you could see where the decals had "burned" into the paint, and at the right angle could read all of the them plain as day. Look close at the brochure, and you will see the car says Intercooler. As for when that ended, I would imagine right at Invoice #103, but I do not have any documentation to support that. The car was sold years ago because I could no longer drive it and enjoy it. When it was my daily driver, it was great. When it was restored, it scared me to drive. I used to put 500 miles in a week on the car. After restoration I drove it almost precisely 500 miles in 1.5 years. It needed to go, so it did. IIRC, it was to go to Colorado Springs, CO, and be 'enshrined' in a private museum/house. The house was to be literally built around the GLHS and two other unusual cars as the centerpiece to the interior of the building. The new owner drove it a little bit, and had some problems with the car, and I am not sure what ever happened to it after that. He was a member on Turbododge.com for a while, but sort of dropped off the radar. I would not mind catching up with him again, but I have not heard about anything with the car in at least 6 years now. I'm sure it is out there somewhere.

http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22901 and your resto on 432 is being watched also. LOL. Did you own the birthday car and before Cindy

nemiro
12-17-2009, 01:52 AM
It was just not fun to drive anymore, because I just worried. I worried about breaking it, rock chips, door dings, you name it. It's one thing to worry about those things. It's another to WORRY about them.

I did not own the Birthday car, although I seriously contemplated it. Cindy had a wreck in CO with it (relatively minor), and it sat parked at my house for about 8 months.

#432 is here entirely because of #053. Had I not done the work I did to #053, the owner of #432 would not have sought me out. #432 is on a whole other level. Easily the priciest GLHS out there, and there's a LOT of goodies that the public does not even know about yet. It will blow your mind when it rolls out ;)

thanks for the history on GLHS #053, i know what you mean when you refer to over-worrying about a car. I hope 053 turns up because it has a lot of interesting history thats for sure.

i am a big fan of your work on Chris's #432 and have been following it's progress for months (over year?). Spectacular work you have done there Neil. I spoke w/ Chris a couple weeks ago and he mentioned he is coming out to break-in the engine prior to your final tune. I think a lot of us are really looking forward to seeing 432 in person in 2010.

Thank you for the kind words. Car is coming out really nice. It gets an alignment on Monday morning (tells you the break-neck speed of this project), and I will put a few miles on it during the day to work out initial bugs. It will then sit until Chris gets here the following week.

Interesting that it has changed hands, as he was posting up on Jalopnik a few months ago, indicating that he owned it. Car was nearly perfect when I sold it.

Aside from a price (if it was ever put on it) for #001, I am pretty sure that no one, and I mean no one, has equivalent money into a GLHS as #432.

168glhs1986
11-22-2013, 09:16 AM
Yea maybe at the time built it was the most money ever spent on a glhs.

No offense as I'm sure it's an awesome "almost stock" restoration. Srt4 brakes and a few other goodies on there, etc...

But today unless everyone is willing to post receipts I wouldn't be so confident in your "not even close" speak.

nemiro
11-22-2013, 09:55 AM
Perhaps. I have yet to see another example. I am also confident that no one besides Chris and I, know exactly how much has been spent on that car. I am pretty confident that what you think was spent on the car is "not even close". But, this is not a contest. No receipts are going to posted by me, that's for sure. Fact remains that I have not seen another GLHS even in the category of #432, and, it's the only GLHS that has been in the Shelby Museum these last few years. It's still there.

p.s.- What a stupid thing to argue over.

It's not stupid at all. Egotistical yes but I just wanted to point out that there are other cars in this community that have had money thrown at them similar to #432.

It's great that it's in a Museum and others are getting to enjoy it. I applaud the owner for building it and placing it there. I for one, would never let that happen. At the time #432 was placed in the Museum, car #86 was not in Carroll's possession. Not saying the Museum wouldn't have taken #432 but just saying car #86 wasn't around. Besides car #86 is not owned by Shelby Museum, it's in Carroll's personal collection along with #001. However after his death I'm not sure who's name is on the title of these cars.

My point is....while I'm sure #432 is an awesome car, it's not the gold standard when it comes to 86 GLHS's out there. However I'm sure it's in the conversation along with cars #086, #126, #276. I'm not putting my car in this category because as I drive my car, track my car, compete with it and as a result it gets wear and tear, stone chips, etc... when they get to be too much for my liking, I will restore it again and again....

Most of the cars listed above are garage queens and there is nothing wrong with that either.

Have you seen the cars listed above?

nemiro
11-22-2013, 10:36 AM
I know a lot about #086, and it was not traded hands for anything close to the money of #432. Still a stupid argument, and in 2009 when #432 was being wrapped up, there was nothing in that car's class.

BTW, the owner of #432 plans to road race the car when it comes out of the museum - hence why it was built the way it was. To me, your argument sounds a lot like sour grapes, but email/forums often cover up a person's true tone and attitude.

I missed the back story on this one. How did a car that was already extensively restored fall under such neglect? In-between owner just didn't care about it?

What was all done to 053? Outside of the complete restore it, was there anything else that was really done or was it a factory restoration?

amazing weather in colorado springs this weekend, drove 053 everywhere, what a nice car, it has a few cosmetic issues but overall a very presentable car and handles like its on rails, gonna put some +40's in it and switch it to E85 though and build a nice 3" exhaust for it, other than that not change a thing.

So, why did the last owner park the car?

When I looked at it and tried to start it had no oil pressure, after making a deal and getting it home I pulled the valve cover to check to followers and lifters, everything looked new, then I pulled the oil pan/pick up tube and oil pump, everything looked new, put it all back together with new oil, no oil pressure, then pre-filled a new filter and it picked up and has great oil pressure now with no noises, that dude that owned it was one weird dude, I have no idea why he stopped driving it, but I don't think he ever washed it or cleaned anything on the inside, I had to get it away from him and out from under the tree where it was sinking into the ground, I wish I would have found it a couple of years earlier.......

BTW- This was discussed before, the "intercooler" decals on #53 are not correct for the vehicle. I knew the original owner and have several pictures of it after Neal purchased the car.

Pic from Cecil County! (1993?). Brings back memories! Thanks!

I bought the car with no decals, but the outline of the decals were burned into the paint. That pic above was indeed after I purchased the car and put OE decals on it. Intercooler was original, and plainly readable in the burned in paint. To be honest, I thought very little of this at the time, but when I went back and rebuilt the car in 2000, I made some phone calls to various people in the know, and was told that the first few cars made (#053 was Invoice #102, second production car built) had a few different variations. Most of it was in hardware and bracket differences, but 053 also had some wiring differences. None were functional differences, more like a few wires were way too long for what was needed, and then taped back into the harness. So, after many phone calls, I had this documented from Shelby in the form of a letter, and that documentation went with the car when I sold it, 14 years ago.

So, in summary, I bought the car from the original owner, Richard Peck of Mystic, CT, who had removed all of the decals a couple of years after buying it new. I put OE decals on the car very soon after I purchased it in 1992, but they did say Intercooled. Very minor detail, but per the burn in to the paint, and documentation received from Shelby, I went ahead and had Positive Impressions make me the decals that said Intercooler when I repainted the car later on.
