I have my van at a mechanics shop and they had to replace the rear main seal. The guy said they didn't have to pull the motor to replace it, just the tranny. Does that sound right?

Yeah, you should be able to do it with the motor in the car.

Yep, pull the tranny, replace seal-you don't need to remove the seal retainer, replace axle seals, carefully check ring gear for cracks around the bolt holes and use sealer on the flexplate to crank bolts. If its an auto, and you have some miles on her, might want to replace the pump seal and gasket, TC seal. My pump seal just let go the other night so it was a nice excuse to put my heavy duty trans in, :thumb:

I know, but I didn't know it was the problem at the time. The seal was rubbing against the flexplate making a real loud squeal. Oh well, it's fixed now.

You always do a rear main seal on a vehicle when changing out the tranny if it has high miles, :thumb:

The motor supposedly only had 6k miles on it though.

Shitty. Even though its new, I always pull the flywheel/flexplate to inspect it, you just never know,

And replace the input shaft seal on the tranny also. Learn that the hard way.
