View Full Version : Top half rattle... and it's getting worse

Our '89 Acclaim (A413) just came back from the transmission shop about two weeks ago (still having problems with the trans. btw) and ever since then if you floored it it would slap the rev limiter, I think too much line pressure. Anyways at that moment you'd hear a top end rattle, like valve float or somethin' screwey.

BUT! Now if you free rev it to like 2,000 you can hear the rattle, it wasn't like that before.

Just wondering what it MIGHT be, don't really feel like removing the valve cover and find nothing, b/c I'm sure I wont, I have an untrained eye here.

Thanks,
-Bryan

Could be that a rocker arm popped off, wouldn't be the first time one a 2.2 has done that when revved way up. Does it seem down on power?

Maybe, but would it run right without one? On our 92 Acclaim TBi whenever a rocker pops off it quits running...

Shat, this is Dave, btw. :thumb:

Sounds like excessive piston to wall clearance, does it quit under boost if it does this could be your problem.

How many miles on the motor, is it fresh or old?

Need details man, details?

One other thing, could be the TC is loose at the flexplate.

96,000 miles old.

I'm hopin' it is the TC to flexplate.

My "rattle" and "chatter" happened to be a rocker that came off. :(http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/11/web/719000-719999/719818_123_full.jpg
And this is the end result.

I've run into weak lash adjusters causing the followers to "dance". If you're gonna pull the VC give them a thumb check, to make sure they stay pumped up.
Edit: I thought flexplate rattle sounded like rod knock...?

Mmmm'kay... Simon- I pulled the inspection plate and tightened all 4 bolt on the flywheel... they were kind of lose but not really... of course this all happened after my laziness got the best of me when I put the 1/2" breaker bar on the cam gear instead of the crank gear and, well obviously the bolt on the cam's gear doesn't like being rotated counter-clockwise... haha

So I started it up and the rattle was still there, it sounded like it disipated a little... so tomorrow I'm going to get it up in the air and take a stethascope (sp) to it all and see if I can hear where the rattle is coming from... it definately sounds like the top half though, but where the hell is it!?!?!?!?

Could you have worn the cam down??? I have the same issue with my daughters car... bought all new lifters... I'm going to swap a cam (mine) into it this time. still chasing the bugger...

i had a reoccuring problem on my GLH with a slider cam.....

the little oil squirter holes in the cam towers would get plugged up. i'd have to pull the cap and remove the debris.

this would typically happen when beating on the car a lot. the valvetrain would get all kinds of noisy. i'd pull the valve cover and start it, looking for the oil squirter deal that wasn't squirting.

it was a clean motor too... i'm not sure where it kept getting debris from.

just something to check for if you still have the valve cover off.

Does it happen to have an a/c compressor with no belt on it? That pulley can vibrate and it sounds plain nasty.

Piston slap?

Well I dropped it back off at the transmission shop, the tranny is still screwed up anyways and it's warranted still. I told them about the problem and they said they were discussing it as well and they though it was the torque converter as well - they're replacing it, so we'll see if it happens to fix it.

Hahhaa, thats my dog, Blade. She's a 5 year old German shep, Boxer, Malamute cross. She pulls her gums, single-left or right, or a double gummer when you have a tennis ball. Will post more pics I got of her at Christmas in my gallery section.

I hope you figure it out Dave but I had the same issue with my van also, I tried 3 different heads with the same lifters and got a quieter one. I see the lifters wear in the bores, and I guess the oil bypass's them. I had a bit of noise in my current head but the PT lifters and conical valvesprings shut it up.
