I've got an 87 2.5L in my daytona that everyone tells me is a tall block.

When we started to pull the trans last night we noticed that there was a TS stamp on the side of the head. Did the tall block ever get a turbo head or was the head replaced on my car? Perhaps it's not a tall block after all? Is there an easy way to identify this block?

The previous owner bought it in 91 and told me he never had to replace the headgasket or open the motor for any reason.

I'm going to take a few pics of it today and will post them later on.

I'm going to take a few pics of it today and will post them later on.

Post a pic off the alt mounting hole area, the alt brackets are slotted
to make up for height difference between tall and short block.

The timing belt tentioner will be smaller than a similar standard block.

Square or round tooth belt?

I have noticed that almost all of the tallblock 2.5s have had TS heads. 4 of the 5 at the junk yard that I checked, the one that wasn't was a replacemnet head.

Russ, these are the only pics I took yesterday when I was out at the garage. I'll be out there again Monday to replace an axle boot and fix some fuel line. I'll snap some more pics then. Some of these are of the clutch I replaced as well, 127k on the factory installed unit.

PIC #4 sure looks like ALT/AC base holes (the slotted
ones) have bolts in top position, taller block would put
them there.

PIC #7 sure looks like the smaller timing belt tentioner.

See if you can read timing belt number next trip, that
would be the cincher (s) tall blocks have different belt.
My guess from pics is it is a tall block.

To make a bigger displacment motor they used longer rods and a
taller deck in a non-common block. No its no better, non-common
block with longer stroke crank and rods. People have tried longrod
motors with no help, kind of reverse engineering from what we know
to work better (2.0 stroker or IMSA lower).

There's no number on the belt that I saw but I'll give it another look tonight.

I was more curious as to why it's got a turbo head on it. Do you think it's got the proper valves/cam for a turbo motor in there?

Letter T on exhaust valve is all you need next to the TS on head.
The intake valves will be the same. Heads are swapped so frequently
by shops anything is possible. Ask an old time mechanic why your
radio is fuzzy in your Mopar 2.2 car and he will sell you a head job:p

The tall block will have a fuel blockoff plate and will have a common block style oil pan that is round near the seals rather than U shaped like the older pans.

Those two things make it easy to spot.
