View Full Version : flex pipe, at DP or mid exhaust stream?

I am building my exhaust, and have a 3" flex pipe. Question is, weld it right where the exhaust turns under the car or right off the turbo?

I like option A myself. The further back you have the exhaust pipe solid to the motor, the more the flex pipe is going to have to flex. Think of the pipe off the turbo as a lever...the longer then lever, the longer distaince the end has to travel.

Where did you get pic A from? Is that something you can get pre-fabbed?

Looks like an ATP Turbo piece.

Yep, you buy that from ATP.

I have a hybrid of your pics, mines in the middle. I also prefer pic A.

Yeah, and its way over priced.

how rough are the vives from the motor with that front mount JT?

That would be rough I would guess. I put a PB front mount in a customers van and the dash shook at idle, put the stocker back in, smooth as butter, :thumb:

Not bad at all if your engine runs smooth, but then again I am not a fan of creature comforts so my view is askew ;)

If you go with a welded front mount or one of Johnny's PolyBushing front inserts and good condition stock rubber side mounts and stock trans mount they tend to damp out most of the bad vibes. :thumb:

ATP needs to make that pipe without the O2 bungs so close to the turbo outlet. Anyone interested in that piece will either already have or will be going to wideband which cannot be that close to the turbo.

I just used ATP's short leg 90 degree elbow, had to drill out for my own O2 bungs but atleast I could put it wherever I wanted.

I actually did not use any flex pipe at all. Not sure what it's needed for, thats why we have rubber hangers...so the exhaust can move around.

I already have the 3" 90, and was curious about the flex. I bought the weld on flanges and bungs for the 02 sensor and wideband. $175 for the ATP piece, or 45 minutes in the shop with $30 worth of material.

I am using all poly mounts also, so I'm not sure. Motor shouldn't flex too much, right? For a side exit?

It's probably more important when using a v-band instead of a donut.

True. I would imagine the exhaust would be moving up/down and front to back a lot with a V-band.

The rubber hangers allow back and forth but not up and down-how the engine moves. I wouldn't have a system without some sort of flex, IE stock donut setup or flex pipe. Its cheap insurance over snapping something.

That kind of what I what thinking when I typed my post. Thinking it would transmit more vibration to the converter also. Not good for it.

I'm using ATP's V band swingvalve.

I don't have a CAT

I run mine like option A, there is about 3-5" of pipe off the swingvalve before the flexpipe
