As the title states. A friend of mine has an '86 Daytona Turbo Z and he needs a new transmission so he said he would like to upgrade. I'm pretty sure I've read in the past that the 520 is a direct replacement for the 525 but I want to make sure before I tell him. Thanks guys.

Eew, not sure about that one... concerns would be axle spline size and trans mount to K-Member.

I forgot about the k-frame mount...but I did tell him he would probably need new axles.
The shifter and cables will work though right?

You'll need new axles, a new shifter, and you have to either weld a new mount to the k-frame or use a long bolt through the original mount.

There is a tab you'll have to remove off of the transmission casing to clear the EGR tube, assuming you still have the EGR intact. For the rear mount, I used a 1.5" piece of steel tubing for a spacer between the ears on the K-member, and then bolted the bobble strut to the outside of it. I used a leftover transmission mount bolt (from the drivers side- through the framerail). Beyond that, just swap in the shifter and cables and new axles and you're good to go.

Thanks for the help everyone. I just wanted to check with you guys before I told my friend anything definite.

It was my impression the A525 , A520 A555 all have the same shift pattern. There is not need to change the shifter.

It's been awhile since I did the swap, but thinking back, I think the shifter itself will work, however I believe the cables themselves are different on the tranny end, and therefore will likely need swapping. (That's not too much of a run on sentence, is it?)

Plus, the 525 shifter sucks! Get the 520-555 one if your going to the trouble of swapping the trans, its well worth it.

Yes, the shifter is the same, but the cables are different due to the bracket setup on the trans end.
