can somebody tell me what the clutch size on the 4banger dakotas are i heard the'll slip under low power, i figured they would be the same size as the front wheel drives , but maybe less holding power can a turbo clutch go in?

My 2001 shop manual says 232mm or 9.13". Not sure about if the FWD clutches are the same.

they biggest turbo dodge is 230 do u think they would swap i'm not a person that knows a hole lot about compatibility with these things , i'm just worried that the dakota clutch wont handle my mototr can you just change the pressure plate acorrding to auto-zone the car is 18spline and the dakota 23

hey do u think i could call luke cluthces and they would be able to tell me what their expensive cluthes would handle for power, not that i have a dynosheet on mine

Depends on what year dakota you got. 92-older have the A535 (AKA the NV2500) and 93-newer have the AX15 trans.
I have a 90', so it has the A535. It does NOT share anything the same with the FWD clutches. The input shaft is 1'', and it is 23 splines. The pressure plate is also not the same.
However, good news is that Chris at Turbo's Unleashed can hook you up. Right now I have a 6 puck with the blue +40% pressure plate in my dakota!

Another tidbit on the 4 cyl. Dakota, the flywheel is 4 pounds heavier than the one in the turbo cars. The one I pulled out of a 1994 Dakota weighed 22 pounds vs. 18 pounds for the one out of my Sundance. Yes they will interchange.

edit: I forgot to add the one for the car does not have the timing mark on the back like the one for the truck.

okay i got a dakota today and a transmission out of a 94 dakota with the jeep motor i would assume the ax-15,bell housing cluthc setup and every thing but the flywheel (i figured it wouldnt work so i didnt get it ) and i dont know about the bell housing, I got the drive shaft too, and all the body parts i needed for a good sound body for 550 so i didint think it was all that bad of deal even if it wasnt the right parts "i heard they normally ask 400 for that tranny but he sorta a freind of mine (so what can i use with this) set up i have to buy a flywheel with six bolt crank to use my 2.2 if not i'm going to have to go with the 2.5:mad:

You'll have to call and special order. You'll have to send the stock clutch to TU for them to custom make you a clutch. Once again, the FWD clutches are NOT the same at all.
What kind of power are you looking to make?

300 at most . needs to be reliable and with that i'll have to be carefull with the rear end , That why i was thinkng about calling luke but it looks like i'm going to have to go with something speacial to begin with so. i may just go with TV to get it done right i hope it doesnt bite me too bad pocket wise, will that bell housing work ?

Yeah I dunno if the Jeep 2.5L has the same tranny, and they are definitely NOT the same bellhousing. The trans should have a tag on it somewhere, check it out to be sure.

What rear end are you using? The stock 8.25 from the dakota can handle decent power.

Hemi417
11-20-2008, 07:49 PM
yeah it has the v6 rear end in it i thought it had the 7.25 but i just found out its got the bigger one i'm on like three different forums finding info on this

My 90' dakota was a 4 cylinder stock and it has the 8.25 with 3:90 gears!

yeah i hope the jeep ax-15 will bolt to the chrysler bell housing for the four banger, because i already bought it , because i thought it would go with the dodge bell housing , i was under the impression thats what chrysler used for the jeep setup , maybe just a different bell housing , i figured that the bell housign would be easier to pick up than the tranny

Not really! Bell housing is the hardest part to find, because the AX15 tranny is behind the V6 dakota's too which are pretty plentious in junkyards. But finding the 4 cylinder bell housing for the AX15 is tough.

A 94 dakota is going to have the dodge engine. they didn't go with the jeep motor until 96.

Hemi417
11-20-2008, 08:55 PM
well i guess it might have been a 96 and the yard labeled it wrong i was just looking at the paint sprayed on the door , its definitly a jeep motor though , i'm doing some looking for a bell housing now ,its not dead yet just more dodge:banghead:
My fault mostly(all) but i thought i had read enough on here i figured it out but maybe i read to much. should have crawled under and looked but its sitting on the frame

i've located two bell housings , and one tranny so far checking them out to make sure there the right ones , an 89 bell housing for the dakota would be the right one correct the guy at the yard said it was for the ax-15, just checking my stuff comes with shifter fork

An 89 will have the A535 trans, not the AX-15. Check the tag.

bfarroo
11-22-2008, 10:34 AM
The AX-15 is only 94-95

Hemi417
11-23-2008, 02:55 AM
okay well the guy that claims its a ax-15 in a 89 dakota is in Pennsylvania , and doesnt really want to go abouts proving to me that its what i need (no pics nothing) but i'm SURE he wouldnt let me return it if its the wrong part so that ones out of the question, i found one at a loacl yard but its an 89 4 banger (would the a535 trans hold up for my power goals ) i know abuse comes into play and all that but at the same time i dont want to be throwing in a transmission that wont handel the power just cause it fits

Are you going to be running a 2.2 or 2.5L? IMO the 535 can't handle the torque of a 2.5, but I've seen 320 WHP put to one with a 2.2L. The 2.2 had an HX35 so spoolup was probably pretty slow, so the engine wasn't making much torque. IIRC, he only had about 300 ft/lbs with the 320 WHP, which is extremely rare with these engines because they usually make a good bit more peak torque than HP.

Hemi417
11-23-2008, 03:48 PM
cool i've got another option then

moparzrule
11-23-2008, 03:50 PM
So I take it you are running a 2.2L?

What vehicle is this going in?

Hemi417
11-23-2008, 04:09 PM
yeah i'm running a 2.2 its going into an 87 dakota i think i might have a custom drive shaft made thats a little longer to make the intake clear and make new motor mounts and , bend the shifter cut the floor (what ever) to make the shifter fit, and rear tranny mount ,it was a v6 truck so i'm hoping its got some pretty steap gears, and right now i'm not making 300hp thats the goal with new parts i would guess 250 rigth now but i'm just guessing with mods which are really extreame by any means

Hemi417
11-23-2008, 04:12 PM
okay 200 hp had to look at some dyno sheets from other cars? like i said guesstamation

moparzrule
11-23-2008, 04:32 PM
I think the A535 can hold 200-250 WHP from a 2.2 no problem, as long as it's a healthy trans.

You have to use an image hosting site, like photobucket.com and use the image link. Or you have to become a contributing member of this site, and then you can post pics.

Hemi417
11-25-2008, 09:00 PM
yeah the rwd bellhousing should have the same starter positin as the front wheel drives right, if so this ones for the jeep motor.

Hemi417
11-26-2008, 07:18 PM
okay got A BELL HOUSING TODAY its the right one for the motor, got it at a local yard ,paid $50 for it , i'm getting ready to uplaod pics its from an 89 BUT it looks identical to the bell housings being used to mate the supra trannies to our 4bangers is there a depth difference or is it the bolt pattern between the bellhousing that changes the tranny application.

Hemi417
11-26-2008, 08:41 PM
okay got looking, this is for the ax-15 ,this is the second one that was offered to me ,as being availible for the ax-15 from an 89 truck i bought this one because i could look at it first ,but this yard i'm sure would have had it labeled right , so i guess they came in the 89 as well i wonder why its not in any databases that way, the only thing i can think of is both these trucks had newer re[lacment transmissions in them, but i dont care ready to get back to work

moparzrule
11-26-2008, 09:50 PM
The AX-15 may have been in the V6 dakota's in 89, did you specify 4 cylinder only? If you only specified AX-15 trans thats bad cuz the V6 also had the AX-15 but they have a different bellhousing!

Hemi417
11-27-2008, 12:33 AM
its for the four cylinder , i got it in my hands , It was at the local yard. i got to look at it before i bought it ,like i said i dont know if this one had a later trans swapped into it or what but this was one of two that had been offered to me. the other one was on the internet and he wouldnt send pics so i didnt get it , the place i got this one from ,is pretty good at organising there parts thats why i'm sure they got it out of an 89, weather that was stock or not i dont know i just though it was weird that there was two from 89 trucks.

hey i want to document everything i do for this build that way if anybody wants to follow suit , they can see what i have done, have an idea of what might work and what might not , what can work and what didnt work for me, my question is what would i have to do to make it a sticky ,or would i be better off learning on how to make a web site , I was going to ask donavans dodge garage if he would want to add it to his site ,maybe as a sub forum? i just know that all my searches didnt come up with a lot , and for me some of what i did find was confusing, with a lack of information it probably disscourages some people who could do it, but dont have the time to go crawl around junk yards for the wrong parts ,(i'm not blaming anybody or anything like that in this post ) i just would like to see a start to finish thread or something on the interent for people who are interested ,because i had to get a lot of info from many different places! there werent any pics that kind of stuff , i got one pic from somebody who had done it before but that was all i could come up with
