Alto makes the 6 disc front clutch pack which is cool but doesn't make a 6 disc rear clutch, only thicker frictions so stop the teeth from shearing off. Is the rear kit worth it? I have never seen the teeth being sheared off but that doesn't mean it won't happen.

I am too cheap to buy the alto kit so I need to do this without spending $200.

Ok, I have modded the rear(direct drum) to accept 5 frictions. Now, the front(forward) drum, I have 5 discs, using a smaller rear bottom plate and no wave ring, I get .040", I was told to keep it loose as its an applied clutch. Is this too tight?

I am curious too, I have my car half apart awaiting the trans rebuild to be finished in the next week. (raining for six days straight)

I don't like the alto 6-clutch. they are too thin and did not last me 5 rounds.

I run 4-direct and 5-forword @ .040-.050 on the forword. line is at 150psi.
never ever had the direct cluthes teeth shear off but i seen it on steet cars.

How did you get 5 in the forward clutch, just like Carl did?

Hmmmm, well, I guess I will be the guinea pig as no one is helping,

Had my friend at his machine shop machine the rear clutch upper and lower plates .070" each, I can now fit 5 steels and clutches in with .040 clearance.
For the front-forward clutch, I used a direct steel on the bottom-its thinner and got 5 fibres and steels in, and used the thickest steel I had-no pressure plate-it measures .096", I air checked it and it barely deforms so it should be good. I also shortend the spring by 1/2 inch per Carl and wow, when I air check it vs stock height, it has alot faster apply, :thumb:

Guess we'll find out soon how she works. ;)

Get us some pictures, I might want to try something myself later this year.

Didn't take pics, just use Carls site in our FAQ section.

your rear cluches should be @ .o26-.o43.

to get 5 cluches in the front drum you need steels for a 1980 413, there thinner and work great, done it for years.

Man your impatient Simon. ;) What Rob said is correct. That is what Brian Slowe did to pack clutches into mine.

Nah, just wanted to git r done. She's all installed and driving her now. Shifts unreal but need to tweak the govnernor, shifts too fast and intermittantly starts off in 2nd. When I was playing with this trans last year, took the Sonnax gov helper spring out, guess I should have put it back in, :banghead:

1-2 is still good but holy shiat, 2-3 is a massive difference over stock, its hits hard and fast, woo hoo, :thumb:

Update, the 2-3 has been getting sloppier and sloppier so Chad has told me how to fix that or help it alot. If it works, I will post the info with pics. Also, the pump started howling?? so I am updating to the 99 and up pump. Will also post that as well.

Well my idea for the front/forward clutch didn't work, the thinner steel plate deformed and one of my clutch discs broke. I just redid it using the thinner A404 steels, it worked but I used one thicker stock steel to get the .040-.050 clearance. That would explain the why 2-3 shift has gone downhill.

Rear clutch has held up fine, looks good as new with my mods on that one to get 5 discs in.

Just redid it again as my torque converter let go. For the forward clutch if I used 5 404 steels, there was too much play, so I used 3 of them and 2 413 steels, using a .065" snap ring I have .020" clearance. Set the rear clutch to .020 and holy shiat, the shifts are nice, and no 2-3 slide bump, it shifts nice and solid now.
