Fuel block-off plate and NOTICIBLE more webbing down low to stiffen the the block.

Cranks are also different on the crank pulley side.

So How Would You Know What U Have

Look at the front of the motor below the oil filter. There should be a block off plate there where the mechanical FP would have been if it is a pre-common block.

Did the tall block have a block off plate?

I can't remember. The pan is also different on a common block or tall block vs the old block. The newer blocks were more rounded and used a one piece gasekt.

My machinist said that the actual cylindar thickness was a little stronger on the older block but as Ken said the common block is overall more beefy.

if you have the engine out pull the oil pan off and check for balance shafts or if the head is off look for crossdrilled holes if the head is on look to see if i has a rollercam the common block was made to run smoother so they added balance shafts, put a roller cam in it and crossdrilled the head for cooling purposes and they figured that since this block by now was going to be fuel injected they done away with the mechanical fuel pump look directly under the air-conditioning bracket and if you see a cast-in-block over what looks like a plate then you have a common block but some 1988 common blocks do not have roller cams the early 1988's don't

what cars/years got the non-CB or the CB?

was there a point where all 4-cyl. 2.2's became CB's?

Chrysler switched to the common block on all 2.2/2.5's in 89. There are a few excepetions like the Maserati TC and 89 CSX where there were some 89 models produced with 88 engines, but otherwise anything after 89 should be a common block.
