ok so i have not even finished my first turbo dodge, but i have the luck of having both a 89-555 and a 92-568 and i keep asking myself the question of witch one to use on my 85 S. charger...
So to give the full picture i have the 555 with the shifter cables and shifter assembly no axles, maybee, i have got the bobble strut solid replacement from TU and the bracket and all
I think i can use the same boble strut replacement and the bracket and all on the 568, but cannot use the shifter and cables as far as i understand from the 555, i got the 568 out of a trashed sprit r/t at the crushers. have those axles, but time was limited so i did not have the chance to grab the shifter and cables
Is not the 568 with a 3 shifter plane and the reverse on the right side instead of left to the first gear?
and i also understand that the 568 might need to be buzzed alittle bit to get into the charger...
But anyway i was just posting this to get a good idea of the situation at hand and get some much valued input on it all

BAH.... I forgot to mention i have the 6 puck ceramic clutch from TU fro the 555 and would have to purchase a new one for the larger spline 568 i dont know if that would sway anyones opinions but, yea anyway thanks for the upcoming input!!!

the 568 has reverse below 5th, no lockout ring on the shifter.

if you already have the small spline clutch go with the A555. every bit as strong IMO, and much better shifter feel (also, IMO :) )

i love the notchy feel of an A520/A555....the A523/A568 is mush in comparison. and yes my R/T has poly bushings. i don't know what is up with that damn car but i hate it (the ONLY thing i hate about my R/T is the shifter feel). my CSX is perrrrrfect even with stock cables.

although, the absolute BEST shifter ever IMHO is a rod-shifted A525...you might look into a rod shifted A555...IMO nothing can beat it.

Those A568 axles are useless on your charger.

You want 88-90 AUTOMATIC omni axles for any L-body with 87 and above A520/A555/A523/A568.

I prefer A520/A555's feel.

Nothing to modify on the A555/A568, though you'll have to grind transmission mount bracket to fit, and weld a bobble strut mount or use a long bolt.

I would invest in a bearing plate on the 555 and use that

Oh yes, definitely! You can't use the spirit axles since they are too long. Find some from an 88-90 Omni with an automatic.

honestly ive had my 520 shifted by two different styles of shifter, one thats all levers and pivots and one that was the ball and socket kind like the newer 523 etc... i found the shift feel had a lot to do with the shifter. If you have one of the old style 520 shifters, i like the way those feel. i broke a piece on mine and would need to get a replacement machined to use it again :(

I prefer the 568s to the 555s, but with the moly plate in the 555 it really is about preference rather than performance.

i have always like the 555 (after you have driven one a awhile they aren't really that notchy ecspecially following the adjustment procedure) other than the lockout ring because you can't get any nice knobs but hopefully by the end of winter i will have the lockout delete feature ready for the rest of the tders
i just want to make sure it is road worthy.

motorweek thought the A523/568 style shifter was "slick" and greatly improved upon compared to the previose 520/555 style shifters.

I like my 523, snick snick, can't wait to get heim joints on the ends.

I like the feel of the 523/568 WAY more than the early notchy 555 type myself.

Just another 2 cents...

Sorry for hijacking this thread, but I am actually considering just this very swap for my daytona too. I understand, that I would need a large spline clutch, swap shifter and cable. What I am not clear about is if I need new axles (92..up) as well? I knwo, there used to be a thread about this but I can't find it for some reason..... THX!

Your current axles will work fine.

cool cool, well all is very good info, i guess i could try out the 555 and see how it does and then go for the 68 if i dont like it, its not going to be a looks car, mainly a gutted street machine, looking to make some money off the honda boys in the neiborhood

now what is this i hear about a hybrid tranny, is this something that might be better than the both?

I'd agree. I love the notchy shifter of the 555. I love feeling it go through the gates. My 568 I had felt like shifting in oatmeal by comparison. It could have had something wrong with it. The booger bushings are supposed to help with that as well.

What about dropping in a Quafie? Isn't one easier than the other?

The quaife isn't easier to install in one vs. the other to my knowledge.

i have to say in my experience if you havent put bushings in your 523/543/568 you really cant tell what's the tranny and whats the bushings. they make a huge difference vs. worn rubber ones.

my quaife dropped right into my A568 trans...no need for that .050-.060" shim that everyone seems to need for the OBX.

I guess I'll keep my fingers crossed with my 555.

a-555 for the win for me. You'll love the short throw it has from the factory and the tight shifting it has too. i hate the bushing type shifters. to spongy for me.

short throw is only the 89 shifter. The 87-88 shifter is like a row boat :) 523/568 almost as short as the 89 555 shifter but still quicker because of the snick snick shifter actuation.

I like that shifter! Nothing to wear, really.. My 89 shifter the bushing on the driver side of the shifter crapped out and i replaced it with some plumbing supplies, but it still sucks.

I'mkinda concerend about putting a moly plate on the 555 because I can't find anybody that knows anything about these cars in the area but never the less anything to look for on both trannys before I make a final decition on either one like bad axel seals or something???

Vigo
11-03-2008, 11:43 PM
bad axle seals mean nothing. Ive never had a bad axle seal caused by hard parts problems on these trannies.. just pop some new ones in.

Loose input shaft is something you can check.

sorry man im a little dumb here, the input shaft is the one that the clutch plate on when everything is bolted together...?
