Okay, before I get slammed for asking this question...
I swear I've searched and searched:o
Anyway, I seem to remember reading that if you want to make a 3.5 final drive A555 that you have to use the ring and pinion shaft out of the same year A520...correct?
But...
I also believe I read that 87 A555 is where the difference is....but 88/89 A555 and A520's will interchange just fine?
I want to do this and have the donor 88 A520 out of my CSX-T...and I have a 89 A555 in the car...so will the 88 A520 ring and pinion shaft work with my 89 A555?
I will be doing the OBX at the same time but will likely be out of town when I do the swap out so I don't want to run into trouble.

87/88 555/520 and 89' 555/520.
That's the compatability breakdown.

That just figures:yuck:
Looks like I gotta find a 89 gear and pinion shaft. Thanks Mario:thumb:

No problem. Are you looking for the A-520 components? I may have them, check back with me tomorrow.

That makes sense however I don't have a 523:( I just finished up putting the moly plate in my 555 too:o
Eh, anyway...if anyone is looking for a 88 520 gearset to hybrid the right year 555 let me know as I got a 520 with a blown 2nd gear.

87/88 555/520 and 89' 555/520.

Alright, now here is where I'm confused. I realize I could just rip things apart but I want to know 100% before I start (without having to buy a new pinion shaft and ring gear if possible) as I don't have the ability to do this at my house and will likely go visit Reeves and Warren to complete things.
On to my question:
87/88 A-555's AND 87/88 A-520's have 5th gear held on by a snap ring right?...and supposedly 89 A-555's have 5th gear held on by a nut...correct? Is this the sole identifying factor how you will know if the A-520 pinion shaft is compatible with the A-555 tranny?...or is it possible there was a mid year change in 89 A-555's from the snap ring to the nut and the rest of the shaft is identical?...thereby non-compatible?
The reason I'm asking AGAIN is because (like I mentioned before) I have an 88 A-520 out of my CSX-T with a blown 2nd gear. I have an 89 A-555 in the car now. In talking with friends *we believe* it may be a left over 88 A-555 because 5th gear is indeed held on with a snap ring instead of the nut like 89 A-555's are supposed to be...therefore we think it might be compatible after all with my 88 A-520.
I hate to beat a dead horse but is compatiability really year specific or is there a grey area here?

That is correct. But also keep in mind that a 1989 turbo minivan uses a 87/88 A555, NOT a 89 A555.
If both transmission 5th gear are holding by a snap ring, they're compatible. If they are both holding by nut, they're compatible.
As the link I posted, the snap ring transmission have a different intermediate shaft than nut transmission. And you can not make a hybrid out of a snap ring and a nut.

Okay, that's what I thought. I had been told that before but wanted to get some other opinions. it will be like a 6 hr drive when I go to do this. Thanks man:thumb:
