View Full Version : No 5th gear after moly plate install

After installing my moly plate, I can no longer engage 5th gear in my 525 trans. I reassembled 5th gear according to the FSM. It appears what is happening is the shift fork is hitting the moly plate and not allowing 5th to fully engage. I when I remove the fork I can see the rail has more travel in it than the fork allows. I'm guessing my fix is to take some material off the fork where it is contacting the plate, but has anyone else encountered this problem? I should mention that the moly plate I'm using is an older one, it isn't one that was made by any of our current vendors (TU, FWD-P or Omni-Potent). It is possible that it is a little thicker.

Any thoughts appreciated!

Mic the plate. Then you can compare it to the other's current plates.

I have a plate from Omni-potent in my 520 that works great, and it is thicker than the stock plate that came out. Are you sure the gear cluster is assembled correctly? It should work...
The plate pictured is the stock plate.

I took great pains to reassemble it per the FSM.

The other thing I should note, the trans in the car has a build date of late 1984. At some point the factory 1986 525 came out of the car (shocker!) and was replaced with this earlier trans. I don't know if that has something to do with it either.

Could it be a 465 trans or it 84 to late of a date to be one?

I got this figured out last night. The moly plate I'm using is very old, made in the early to mid 80s. The moly plate was missing a detent to allow full travel of the 5th gear fork. I was looking at lametec's write up in the knowledge center here and noticed the detent for the first time. I took the fork and took a little material off the end using a bench grinder. This gave me the clearance I needed to fully engage 5th gear. Problem solved, whew. Thanks to all who responded!
