It is GRM magazine's annual car challenge... build a cheap car ($2008 or less) and compete!

This event is a blast. I helped with the build of the Puzzle Car ('84 Charger) over the last couple years and attended last year and was instantly hooked, so this year, I tore my Shadow apart and built it into a challenge car. There were a ton of changes I had to make to have it meet the budget requirements and it needed body/paint work, all of which we did ourselves.

The Puzzle Car placed 7th overall. The breakdown was 10th in the concours, 18th in the autocross (barely had brakes...need to fix that!) and 5th in the drags with a 12.08 @ 117 mph. The Shadow placed 5th overall, 7th in the concours, 14th in the autocross with a very quickly locking right rear brake (another brake issue to fix!) and 3rd in the drags with an 11.74 @ 119.5 mph.

Huge thanks to everyone that helped me with the Shadow, especially the lovely wife who not only helped give me the time to do the work, but she was out there helping us with body work, sanding filler, scuffing paint, etc. Dave Skrab and Barry Miles were huge helps in the actual build of the car and tons of others who contributed, including Mary Beth (dodgeshadowchik) who drew up a cool decal, Dave Lucidi for making the decals and Guy Douglas who lent me some cold start injectors to get me that boost that I needed for the drags.

I'm definitely going back next year with the Shadow after some changes. We'll be brining another car, but it will probably be something new.

Here are some pics of the cars from the concours/autocross day. I'll add some drag pictures once I get them uploaded.

There was more in it, but something in the bottom end let go. It still runs, but it doesn't quite sound as nice as it should!

Exhaust, downpipe, tires, fuel lines, fuel system, interior, regulator, WG, used stock T-III long block, intercooler, suspension, open diff trans. It's a completely different car from what was at SDAC back in June.

If it wasn't hurt, it would be going to Cecil in a few weeks. But, she's done for the year. In a few months, I'll work on it again. I'm just burnt out on it now...since July, I've been working on it almost every night.

Man you have been busy! Total different car is right. I don't blame you for being burned out one bit.

You going to bring the SRT out to Cecil?

This event was a Blast! Just taking a look at the ideas and the creativity of the other competitors is really impressive. I'd highly recommend at the minimum to go and spectate. Just ask Reaper. Thanks for coming out and supporting the event.
I'll also post some pics once I get them off the camera. Pretty schnazzy stuff.

How exactly is a stock t3 longblock allowed?

guyd_15

As long as you build the car for $2008 or less it's allowed.

Come on Pat, if you had said you were wooopping me in the puzzle car, all will be forgivin.
and I'll say publicly you kicked my butt with a .016 lite to my .029 and were never behind even with a "hurt" motor.
We will get you next year.LOL

You get it in a wrecked car that you didn't buy on TM.com.

It's real easy keeping to the budget, you just barn find a GNX and TD together in a $500 for both as long as they're out of here in a day, deally, sell the "extra spare parts" for $12,000 and get to work on the TD....

DaveSkrab

No need to appologize, because technically... I DID make a couple passes and set a personal record in the process. ;)

Now we just need to get mine ready to go!

Thanks for the kudos! My GLH was having a terrible ignition problem that i couldn't figure out. This limited boost to 6psi at both the autox and drags. I ran a 16.0 at the Challenge. A month before the challenge i had run a 14.0. Plus, after that 14sec run i added an extra injector. I was hoping for mid-13s at the challenge, but alas...

The extra boost certainly would have bumped me up a buncha spots in the standings, but Pat and Barrys cars are soooo much cleaner and faster than mine its not funny.

It was good to see you guys down there. And Dave, sorry for calling you "Tim" all weekend. I'm terrible w/ names....

Here's Pat's car making a 12.7 drag pass:

Did anyone ask why they used the pits for an autocross instead of the roadcourse?

We did use the roadcourse in 04 and 05 ? on the years,, I think, but it "allowed" the real fast cars a big advantage :eyebrows: or the parking lot just worked better. so off to the parking lot we went. I like the lot myself much better to watch the racing plus you can pit one time and do all three events.
