OK,

I need input. I have to decide which Daytona to save and which one will be used as parts. :confused2:

Car 1,
86 Daytona C/S. (Holsetshelby's one)
Gun Blue.
90,000+ miles, stick,
Most power features, - seat.
Sunroof.
Floorboards don't have a spec of rust on them
But the engine is shot
Needs body work, nothing bad. Just some dents and the doors sag.

Car 2,
85 Turbo Z,
Two tone red and silver.
20,000 miles, auto,
All power features.
Sunroof.
Floorboard are shot , put my hand right through and into the car, and there is some rust in the frame and rear hatch.
Outside paint looks great for a car of this age.
Great engine, only 20,000 miles.
Door shut real nice.

I though it would be easy just to cut out the floors and maybe the rocker panels on the 86 and weld them into the 85 and swap out the auto in the 85 for the 86 stick.

But I also was thinking that with a clean 86 body, minus the sagging doors and dents, I could gut everything out of the 85, I mean everything but the auto, and put it into the 86.

Either way, one car has to die to let the other live. Pity, :( but if I don't jump on this soon, my wife will let me die, if you get my gyst.

So now which one gets save and which one is the parts car??

Depends on whether you think you can actually stop the rust damage on the 85 because it sounds like a lot less work if nothing but the floorboards are rusted and you can coat the thing in that anti rust stuff. How bout suspension parts all stock on both?

86 for sure. cs arent super common, plus its gunmetal, plus its rust free.

Both suspensions are stock.
In fact, both cars are all stock, crappy Chrysler radios and all.
The c/s also has a busted window. Someone though it was funny to smash it in.

As far as stopping the rust on the 85, I don't know. It's up and into the front wheel wells and I not 100% sure on the rockers. I got the remove the skirts to have a better look. I know the 85's spare tire well is still in great shape.

Go with the 86. You'll spend 6 months dealing with the rust on the 85 and it'll never look unmolested underneath. Plus, the C/S is somewhat of a rarity. You can swap all the goodies over to the 86 no problem. Even the power seat is just a plug and play thing.

For me it would be no question, the 86 C/S. When the rust gets into the bottom it is hard to get them right again. Stay with the good frame rails/floor and swap the bolt on stuff.

+1! Fixing rust sucks.

+1 on the 86 though save everything from the 85. Those turbo Z moldings and bumpers are getting impossible to find in decent shape.. Definitely strip and save or sell whatever you don't use. Once the rust gets into the wheel wells too bad and has taken over the rockers your looking at A LOT of work.

I agree with everyone on saving the '86, but why kill the '85 to do it? It sounds like the '86 is an engine, paint job, and a set of door pin bushings away from being a nice car. Why not pull the engine out of the '85, swap any other parts you want between the two, and then sell the '85 complete minus engine to somebody for a project? You never know, somebody might already have an engine ready to go in, not mind fixing the floors, and be looking for a 1st gen project car.

Well,

Looks like the 86 get saved. I going to start pulling the engine and other stuff off the 85 (seats, trim, etc). After I'm done, I'll see about selling the 85 shell. Keep your fingers cross. I'm hoping for no suprises while doing the swap. :thumb:

I voted for the '86 also (poll doesn't close till next month) :)
It is the most logical because of the shape and rarity, but I'm still kind of fond of the first gen daytonas. My favorite was the '84 turbo Z

Once the rust cancer starts its over. Unless you can do a complete strip and dip of the body. Engine swap.........

If you decide to scrap one, I would be interested in the dash from it. I think it will allow me a better set of instruments for my K car. The K based dash is cluster is lower and wider than anything else and you have two choices, analog with minimal gauges or Tokyo by night with weird problems.

I like the 85, but the 86 will probably be less work, and already has the 5 speed. MT FTW! :D
