I need to put a muffler back on my car after running without one for a number of years. Anymore at my age, i get annoyed from the low pitch drone during extended driving. The vehicle is an 87 J body LeBaron running a 2.5 t-1 with a modded TU turbo and using a factory t-2 intercooler the exhaust is 2-1/2. I wonder if a muffler from either a PT Cruiser turbo car or one specified for a Spirit RT would flow well enough and be quiet for my tastes.

All stockers are pretty restrictive except the SRT4, which doesn't have one, ;)

The R/T I have, which I drove before the PO took it apart has a, 2.5 inch system with a Dynomax Ultraflow, it sounded nice and no drone but they are expensive.

Anything that is straight through, will have some drone to it. I use the same type as Simon, but on an Omni, it drones a little. On a Lebaron, it won't be as bad, better insulation.

putting a race magnum under the car before the double 90 makes it nice and gets rid of the drone . if you put it in the stock location it will still be loud :thumb:

On my old daytona I had a dynomax bullet muffler where the stock CAT goes, and a ultraflow OVAL out the back with a turn down. This system was pretty quiet, even for 3'', and no drone. But get the oval ultraflow, it's still straight through but it's much quieter than the round ultraflow as I've found out recently.

Look up Quiet Flow.

I run this in my 3" system on my Daytona. It got rid of the drone on the highway. I also like the fact it is tuneable. Too loud? You can cap the center pipe. That is too quiet? You can drill a hole in the cap. It is way lighter than my old 3" Hooker MaxFlow.

Make sure the exhaust extends beyond your bumper/body of car. That will make the biggest difference in drone.

It's all much nicer now. Had a full 2-1/2" turbo back, mandrel bend exhaust system installed with new high flow cat and magnaflow.:)

What magnaflow did you go with?

a little off topic but IMO srt4's sound awesome with straight pipe and the stock duals out the back

Yeah but they aren't straight pipe. They have a pretty restrictive cat, and a resonator. Those both quiet it down substantially.

yeah but when they remove them there loud is what im saying. my neighbor up the street has one with 3" straight pipe. he can idle that thing all the way out of the delevopment never getting above 1500rpm's and i can hear him the whole way,loL!

Ahh, I see. I thought you were saying the stock exhaust sounds good because it's straight pipe! Yeah anything with straight pipe is loud, especially with larger hybrid turbo's...with the stock turbo the turbine housing is small and restrictive, the larger the turbine and wheel, the louder the exhaust will be!
I haven't tried my stage 3/.63 turbine yet with straight pipe, I have tried a mitsu and it was very loud but sounded awesome. I'll probably go with straight pipe at the cecil event this year in November.

because he has twice as many valves and different displacement not to mention other substantial differences? of course they sound different. pop pop poop

Exactly, the SRT4 is a whole different animal.

On my 8 valve, with a T3/T4, stage III wheel, I tried 3 inch, straight exhaust, holy crap, :wow1: I couldn't even hear myself think in my shop, it rang the walls, :(

i put an open downpipe on my t1 mitsu spirit and found it to be purty damn quiet...

same thing on my 3.3 dynasty makes me really uncomfortable. LOUD.

I'm not saying it was loud all the time, just when you got on it. Yeah just driving around town it just had a low burble to it, but getting on it WOT full boost it was crazy loud. I was running 22 PSI on the mitsu though, perhaps that had something to do with it?

My DynoMax race bullet sounds great and it doesn't drone and isn't excessively loud when cruising.

Mitsu is like a huge cork, :eyebrows:

3.3, no cork, so yeah, loud, :o

I'm still pretty happy with the Edelbrock SDT I put on back in April. It is compact in size and sounds like a Flowmaster somewhat. I'm running a 2 1/2" downpipe with the SDT, 2 90 degree turns and then a downturn before the axle.

The SDT would fit in the stock location on its' side. I may do that when I put a cat back on.

I like my Dynomax, its pretty deep at idle and not too over powering at WOT
