Heading out tomorrow for the big Team Shelby event in Terlingua Texas.
4 days of road racing, drag racing, road rallying and a top speed challenge. Mixed together with a nice resort, great food and activities and the man himself, Carroll Shelby!:hail:

The GLHS is ready to go with it's Terlingua team rabbit and hash mark regalia. Although it's mostly stock, we hope to represent well against all the booming V8 iron.

The event was awesome!!
We ran the brithday car and Steve ran his GLHS. We represented well!!!
We made a lot of believers out of the shelby mustang guys and everyone was cool!. I'll post some of the pictures tonight and I'm sure Steve will chime in.
BTW we didn't have time to shakedown the b-day car before the event so we didn't know how it would do, but 600 miles at speeds up to 130+mph, it did great!!! Carroll Shelby was happy to see them out them giving the mustangs all they could handle through the mountain twistys.
later!

What a great event! I have been to many car events over the years-from high roller Ferrari club galas to low key MG affairs. That said, I must say that Team Shelby outdid themselves with the Terlingua Reunion. The rooms were 5 star, scenery spectacular, the food was top drawer, the goodie bags generous, the events challenging and exciting, support from local law enforcement was tremendous, weather was perfect, local Texans were friendly and enthusiastic, the cars entered were fast and stunning to look at, the celebs were great and accessible and Carroll looked better than I've seen him in years!!!

The event started off great when we walked up to registration and found that the Shelby folk had parked the GLHS right in front of the main registration entrance(we had the car shipped to the event and it arrived before we did).

Hats off to Cindy and James-they really busted tail to get that B'day to the event. They were great fun to hang out with and they drove that CSX like they stole it(check out my pic of their air dam!). FWD walks the walk.

We had a blast beating on the S car. We were plagued with intermittent cooling issues, but that didn't prevent running her hard. Some of the open road sections were essentially flat out. While the Omni probably topped out around 130-135, some of those Shelbys were capable of much more. Our goal was to keep the car together and bid our time until we hit the curves.

We entered a long, twisty, narrow road that lead up to an observatory and it was on! We passed a number of Shelbys(GT500s and GTs) and had a great dice with a modded GT500(I have video!). At the end of that section the owner walked over to me and said, "That's one hellava fast Dodge!" Another that we had passed said, "We were doing 120 in those sweepers and you passed us!"

You will not hear me bash any of the other owners, as they were all very supportive of the presence of the two Shelby Dodges. Many told both James and I that they were glad to see them at the event. A number of new Shelby owners also said that they wanted to pick up a Shelby Dodge to add to the fleet.

As great fun as all this was, nothing tops the the reaction of Carroll Shelby himself. He was at all the event during the week-end and seemed in great spirits. During one of the autograph sessions he was talking with James and Cindy and asked if they were in the GLHS that was giving everyone hell during the rally. He was also glad to see the birthday car again.

Unexpectedly(Carroll doesn't sign many cars these days as its hard for him to get in and out of them), Carroll came out on the final morning to sign a couple cars. He did a Terlingua Shelby and a GT500. His assistant was saying that he'd only be able to sign one or two more, so I walked up to Mr. Shelby and asked if he'd be willing to sign a Dodge. He replied, "Hell yeah, I will!" and walked over to the S car. He asked me how much boost I was running and said that he was glad to see me giving them hell out on the road. He then related how much fun he'd had with his GLHS and said he still had a couple dozen of the 4 valve heads for it. He probably took more time signing my dash than any of the other cars and wrote(in huge letters) "Enjoy" and Carroll Shelby. His assistant said that he needed a picture of Carroll signing the S so he could send it to one of the Ford reps that is rumored to own a GLHS!
Carroll then hung around all morning signing cars(including the B day car) and other items.

I've posted a few here and will post more as time allows. To summarize, the folks at Team Shelby, Bullrun and the Lajitas resort were all fantastic. The event was one of the best and the other Shelby owners were friendly, supportive and inclusive of the Shelby Dodges. I highly recommend attending a TS event if you get the chance.

Wow, what a great event! I can’t find the words to describe how exciting this event was. The Team Shelby folk’s simply went over the top in putting this together. While the 2300 dollar price tag seemed steep at first  the bargain it really was became quickly apparent. As Steve has said, the resort was 5 star, the meals where great, the scenery was incredible and the events did more then satisfy your need for speed.:thumb:

After a full day of working on the car I finally told Kevyn we’ve got to load it up and go. We left at 9pm Wednesday night and drove through the night arriving at about 12 noon the next day. We blew a tire on the trailer about 70 miles into the trip just barely out of Houston. :(We limped to the next truck stop and just caught them before they closed their shop. They helped us put on our spare for free :hail: but they did not have another tire to sell us so we were out of spares and it was 11pm with no one open until morning. So we rolled on at 60 mph for the next 600 miles with no spare. That next day we got to Alpine, got a spare and didn’t have any other issues for the rest of the trip.:D

Testimony to Kevyn’s wrenching ability :hail: and the car itself; I drove the hell out that car without any issues. On the police escorted high speed run, for the 80+ miles to Alpine we probably averaged about 100mph and at times exceed 135. I was determined not to let the Shelby Mustangs get away and I was not going to be the car that slowed anyone down. I did have to make a few passes on some cars that didn’t want to run that fast. I don’t think the RPMS ever dropped below 4100. When we got to Alpine I had several of the Mustang guys come over and tell me how impressed they were to look up in their mirror and see me still there. Sure, there were some long straights where they put a little distance on me but I always managed to catch up and only a handful of cars felt the need to pass me. Poor Cindy in the passenger seat was beside herself. I think high speed runs are always more difficult for the passenger. ;) I’ve also got to give props to the Sheriff who ran 120+ in a big ford pickup. He definitely should be in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck series.

The drag event was fun but a bit hairy. It was held on an airstrip and times were recorded using stop watches and radar guns. The track was quite wavy almost lifting me from my seat and then bottoming the fenders out on the tires. It was also very dusty. My first run was against a 500KR who smoked me by about 5 cars. I talked to him afterwards and he was a bit confused that he hadn’t completely annihilated me and thought for a moment I was going to get him in second gear. He left me a little out of the hole. I was just trying to take it easy but when I saw him spinning his --- off and heard him hitting the limiter I nailed it, grabbed second gear and made up some of the distance. However, when I hit about 10psi I spun and I guess he grabbed because he took off and pulled several cars while I went to third. There he got a couple of more but that was it. I barely got to forth when crossing the finish line. Had I known the car was going to take the beating so well I would have put a few goodies on it before I left. It was a stock setup and only made 10 psi of boost. I did a 15.5 according to their calcs and a lot of the mustangs were in the 14.90 range.

The road rally was the main event. I’m not sure of the exact miles but we had to cover about 380 miles from 10a,-6pm with a long stop for lunch. This time there was no police escort but that didn’t stop anyone from pushing their cars. I left near the end of the pack but by lunch was about half pack. I made a lot of distance up on several of the hard runners when they turned the wrong direction going into the national park. I took advantage and put the pedal to the metal on some roads that would have been horrifying to pass on. On the final leg a couple of folks pushed a little to hard which changed the outcome dramatically. As Forest Gump would say, “ And that’s all I have to say about that”.

Carroll was awesome. It was good to see him so enthusiastic and getting around so well. He really appreciated the fact that we were keeping these Shelby Dodges on the road and in competitive form. When Cindy had him sign the glove box he boosted to Cindy he had five of them to which Cindy replied “and I have eight of them”. He let out a chuckle and said “Well God bless you”.

I can’t say enough how welcomed we felt by the Shelby Mustang owners and Team Shelby. They really appreciated our Shelby Dodges and we made many new friends. A few of them commented that they would be looking into adding one to their collection. Finally I wanted to add some thanks to Steve, his wife Caprice and Patrick for coming out and sharing the good times. They were great people to hang with and I learned a lot from all the wonderful conversations.

yes, we had a great time. I already knew Pat, and had heard of Steve, but it was really great to finally meet Steve and his wife. She could give me some lessons on being the passenger LOL
I was really pleased and pleasently surprised at how well the b-day car ran. When we got it, it had several issues, but Kevyn did a good job of sorting them out before we left, but with not much more than a drive around the block before we left, we were not sure how it would hold up. The car had a real sweet spot between 85-115 mph and James spent a lot of time in that range. After getting pulled over Friday night and let off, James said he wasn't going to push it Sat. during the rally. Well, after the first Shelby mustang passed us, that thought went out the window! Borrowing a phrase from Steve... "party foul, game on!" and away we went! I was a better passenger the second day at high speeds and I told James if we had brought the 87 glhs with a rollcage, 5 point harness and a helmet, I wouldn't worry at all! All this took place in west Texas in an area know as the big bend. If you ever get a chance, that is a great national park to drive trough. You won't be dissappointed in the views and lucky for us, they had some rain previously so the area was very green with very little dust.
Later,
Cindy

I had a great time also. We sure did suprise quite a few mustang guys in Steves GLHS. Most of the mustang guys where very friendly to us and only had good things to say.

It was great hanging out with Cindy and James for the weekend. The bullrun guys put on one hell of a great event. I still cant believe that we had a police escort with about 50 shelbys and most everyone was doing 120 mph down the road for about 90 miles including the police truck that was leading. The 400 mile road rally was also great.
