Hi,

I am planning my winter upgrades for the Daytona and the primary goal is getting my cal dynotuned which is already scheduled.

The company I am doing the dynotuning with, is a professional Race Car Builder mainly for Citroen and Renault GT Series and Rally Cars. (This is the type of company that won't let you go on a dyno without beforehand tapping all four runners of the manifold for temp sensors and lot's of other stuff)

My initial goals are conservative 300HP on the wheel (before going there I would have said "ambitious" but they teached me some lessons about what is possible so now I say conservative because I need to stay within a budget).

During the first session, we were discussing my goals which basically are shifting the power curve to a lower RPM Range for obvious reasons (it is no good getting a hell of power at 5000 RPM with only 1000 RPM left to enjoy it). My condition was at stage 1 using my own SMEC and only in stage 2 getting a custom ECU done because for the money I am going to spend I want to learn things. So I am happy to live with some HP less for the benefit of having understood why I am going to have more power with my current configuration.

So the plan goes in 3 stages:

Stage 1: Getting the safe max out of my current configuration using SMEC
(The results out of this I will share with you end of october)
Stage 2: Getting a custom ECU (Magnelli) initial tuned for my current configuration
Stage 3: Building Engine, Going 16V and raising the RPM Range for more serious power

Stage 1 and 2 this year, Stage 3 whenever I have the money

Until here the background.

So we discussed various ways and options for a turbocharged car.

One point they raised is that it would be worth a consideration to complement the Turbocharger with a coupled (via Clutch) Supercharger.

That would allow me to use a bigger (not a monster) Turbocharger developing it's full potential let's say up from 4500 RPM and until then cover my PSI needs to get accelaration and smooth powerband off the line.

They would engage/dissengage a clutch for the supercharger once a pressure limit is exceeded using the MAP and RPM signal to determine the right moment.

Has anyone ever done this yet? I know there are folks that Supercharge N/A cars but I am referring to complementing the Turbo with a Supercharger?

I found this an interesting idea - even though this is not cheap at all and in my case earliest at stage 3. But it has my head working right now.

Any thoughts on this Supercharger+Turbocharger Configuration??

Some OEM's have done it, so sure, its not a bad idea. If you have the time and money, go for it, :thumb:

Yeah twin charging has been around for a long time.

When I think twin charged, I think 80s MR2 supercharged with a HKS turbo kit.

I don't think anybody has ever twin charged a turbododge motor. There were supercharger kits for the N/A car. Researching that might help out in a custom setup.

I'd say focus your efforts on building a 16v hybrid motor. You should be able to find a decent priced PT cruiser head to use. Or even a 2.4 turbo swap.

I really don't think that you would see any true benifit of it especially when the cost vs. return is looked at.

300HP should be super easy with well thought out mods. I would think that approaching 400 HP in the stock ECU shouldn't be to difficult if you are willing to spend the dollar for high quality port work etc.
