this is the turbo that came on my '89 CSX when i got it. i was told it was a T3/T4 46 trim. but doesnt the inlet look too big to be a 46? a 3" hose fits over the inlet

It could be a 46 trim as it has a T4 cover, comp wheel, you would need to measure. Its a stage 1 wheel, a good guess based on the stock turbine housing and sv.

+1 you need to measure the inducer and exducer of both wheels to know what you really have. You could probably get away with just a quick measurement of the turbine wheel if it looks to be a stock wheel though as those are pretty easy to spot and there isn't much debate when you look at the chart.

the wheel looks about the size of my 46. but the housing is huge.

Looks like a T04E wheel in a T04B compressor housing. Just take of the compressor housing and measure the wheel size than you can tell what it is.

Does it have the .63 turbine housing?

+1 for measuring...

That was my thought, E wheel in a B housing...could even be a B wheel though.

Looks like a stock .48 to me

95% of the time they come off intact and you can just re-use it. A good trick is to loosen all the bolts up and spin the housing some first, and then proceed taking the bolts out to remove the housing.

If that inlet is 3" then that wheel only looks about 2"
Which is about the size the owner claimed it.
That is a very old compressor cover.

T04B or T04E compressor housing usually don't have gasket. I've open 7-9 of them up already.

TO4B ''S'' trim is about that size too. He needs to measure, the exducer will tell the story really quick.

Yours is not a Garrett unit, last I check.

A small display of what I have...

ok, the wheel, at the base (i guess), is 3"

What are you measuring it with? You really need a pair of calipers.

Base is exducer.

What's the inducer number?

Measure it like this.

Some covers have an O-ring, some have nothing. I've never seen a gasket on a T3/T4 before but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

Has to be more accurate than that. To tell the difference in exducer between the 46 trim T04E and the super S trim T04B is .05'' difference!
The 46 trim should be 2.95'' exducer and 2.003'' inducer.

That pic is a great example of how to measure the wheel. You should take a few more and do a little write up for the KC.

Also, where did you get those gloves? It looks to be the same place that bigfoot orders his through.
