'95 NYG Neon, DOHC/5-speed, NO options except for A/C, radio delete, 22mm/16mm sways, no ABS and rear discs. I am pretty stoked!
So.......how much nitrous will one of these hold?

First of all, nice buy. Second what are your plans with the car, just adding nitrous to a stock car is just asking for trouble.

Nah, I am going to do a LOT of suspension work; waiting on a reply from Bill Cuttitta about some Koni reds he has (with Mopar springs and a larger rear sway) to buy and then do all the bushings in the car, all the routine maintenance, then a wheel/tire swap. The car has 145,xxx on it, so obviously a timing belt, water pump, RN9YC spark plugs, filters, valve cover gasket, solid shifter bushings and 255 lph fuel pump will be added. Didn't the dual cam cars get a tensioner upgrade in mid-'96?
The car also sounds like the pilot bearing is dry, so I am sure a new clutch will go in since I have to drop the trans. to check that, anyway. I will check the mounts and bobble strut for damage; I understand these were pretty soft from the factory. Also, the car has a quick ratio steering rack and the 3.94 (?) trans., I was told. I will have to verify this, but the guy that told me this knows Neons fairly well.
I was thinking of putting an '05 or newer SRT-4 trans. in for the LSD. Thoughts on that?
Oh, and the nitrous.........yeah, I was thinking of building an all-motor 2.4 Neon out of this car, but still strap a kit to it (fogger kit with anular nozzles pointed right at the back of the valve). How can I retard the timing? MSD?

If the car you have has rear discs, no ABS and a radio delete, it sure sounds like an ACR. Does it have foglight holes in the front bumper but no foglights?
These cars love juice. As already said, get the 255lph pump. Its usually cheaper than a stock replacement anyway. The trans will be fine, but you will need some upgraded axles. I forget the combination of PT cruiser this and Pbody that.... but i know you can get some nice axles once you upgrade to 2nd gen Neon front hubs.
If you are gonna stick with a five speed, and juice it. I see no point in going with a 2.4, The extra stroke will only limit your rpm and your traction. Build up a 2.0 bottom end and go with cams and valvetrain that likes to rev.

Yeah, foglight holes and no foglights. It also has a star insignia on the lower right front fender down low.
How much nitrous, and how do I retard the timing?

With a stock shortblock, 75 shot would be max. If you can keep axles in it, and get traction, you'd have a 13 second car.
No timing retard needed if you run 93 and some octane booster. Timing retard would require an aftermarket ignition box like crane or MSD. I prefer crane.

Yeah, me too (prefer Crane). Could I run a 75-shot on a single nozzle, or would I need a fogger system?
I am hoping the struts and motor mounts and slicks will keep wheelhop to a minimum, thus keeping axles from snapping. I am also going to somehow load the back so that it can't unload the front when I launch, like I did with a set of extra air shocks in my mini. *Or* I could run a set of coil-overs and run the rings up as far as they'll go (?) on the back.
I took it to the Cat Scales on the way home. Pulled it off the trailer just to weigh it. The car was 2390 lbs.----->bone dry.
How durable is the trans., and what should be done about the lack of LSD?

Slicks will elimnate wheehop, but upgraded mounts are still a must. You're still gonna brake axles with an aggressive launch tho. They are just really tiny.
The trans is more durable than most think. Quaife and OBX have bolt-in diffs for this trans.

Can't the SRT4 trannies be bought for a good price? I see them all the time on ebay, and the (?) '05 and newer have an LSD. Is this an option?
Are gen II Neon axles better (SRT4), and do they fit?

I don't know for certain that the SRT4 trans will fit a 1st gen

A single fogger nozzle can do up to 150hp.
Angelo Taylors neon went low 12's on the juice, not sure how he retarded timing, but IIR it had more than a 75 shot on it.

SRT4 transmission = hydraulic clutch setup. The 1st gen Neons are cable clutch setups.
Congrats on the NYG tho. I just got one recently as well. :) Let's see some pictures.

I think I am just going to build a stout 2.0 short block for it and spray the sh*t out of it. I will have to figure out the timing thing, though. I would think that a 150 shot in two stages would be trick.
Too bad about the SRT4 trans. as I HATE the hydraulic set-ups. I guess I'll start with doing all the maintenance, do the suspension and put a 75 shot on it to start. Oh, and I guess I'll have to get some axles, too. What are the best axles to get? Someone mentioned PT, but what application should I ask for?

Dodge Aries K, if I send you pics to your e-mail, can you host them. I have not been successful in doing so on this board.

you dont need the SRT trans anyway. the OBX LSD is ~450 and is cheaper than a SRT trans. plus the T350 trannies in a neon shift so nice. the SRT sometimes doesnt. its kinda hit or miss with them

Is there a write-up on installing one of these LSD units into a T350? I'm not a trans. guy, but I think I could handle it with a little coaching.

Congrats Les, does your NYG have the black door strips? I'm pretty sure that's another option the ACR cars didn't have.

This car is indeed an ACR model.

There's currently one of these at the Monrovia Pick-A-Part where I live. Not sure if it's an ACR but it does have the DOHC motor.

There's a NYG Neon at the yard by you? I need a trunk lid... mine is unhappy.

Thanks for hosting those, man! Yeah, the inserts on the bumper covers were painted black with a brush and poster paint; there is green paint underneath. The guy I bought it from said he taped it off the first time and painted it because he thought it would look better. When he went to sell it, he hastily repainted it to cover up the green. And he took his radio out. I guess there was a plate there that he cut in to, but he said the car didn't even have speakers.
I need a new dash. This one is cracked. And I also need a new driver's seat. I am also interested in buying suspension parts and wheels for it it anyone has anything.
I am trying to take it to the GR Motorsports $2008 Challenge next month. I just e-mailed Per to see if he would let me make a late entry since I just got it. I am taking the AWD TSi next to it as well. If anyone is in the Gainesville area, you should come out! It is October 3, 4 and 5th, and will be held at the NHRA track in Gainesville. My name is Les, and I'll be the one handing out free beer. ;)
