I've got a 1991 N/A did the same thing, it was a bad capacitor in the transmission computer made it go into limp mode. I would double check all the electrical connections and wiring on the transmission first. If you don't find anything obvious maybe pull the transmission computer, open it up and take a look. Worked for me, $3.00 part and a little soldering got mine going again.
Sorry but that's the extent of my knowledge on Mitsubishi automatic transmissions which may not even apply to your newer one.

I think there is some info on www.vfaq.com if that helps. It will show how to check trouble codes and all. Let me know what you find out; I am having the same trouble in my AWD.
