View Full Version : Thoughts on 'Treadstone' intercoolers?

Was looking at intercoolers on eBay for my Shelby Lancer (A/C removed). I was considering getting another NPR like my Omni has, then I was thinking of just getting a Spearco like the vendors sell.

I came across some other intercoolers on eBay made by Treadstone. Have any of you guys used one of these before? The advertised air flow rating is pretty high, and it looks like I could fit this one in my Shelby Lancer.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Ideas?

I've heard they're just Spearco cores with similar endtanks welded and rebadged. Supposedly they're not bad, but I think they 'boost' their flow specs a bit.

I bought some rubber elbows off those guys.(Vecco)
Good vendor.
I plumbed up a top to bottom flow Spearco in my GLHT.
It's almost too easy.

Yeah that is one reason I'm tempted to get this Treadstone or a Spearco. I would probably save a lot on the plumbing materials and end up with a better intercooler than another NPR setup.

I may still go with another large NPR setup though, if I can find the same exact unit I put in the Omni. I used to have it installed in my Lancer so it would go back in with relative ease.

I say go for it. You should be good. I have heard they are as good as Spearcos also... just not as much.

I would get it so the connections are on opposite ends.

This would be an awesome intercooler IMO

Best one I have found on the internet for the price. Would flow more then any of those crap intercoolers they sell for 1000hp supras.

Bell intercoolers would want about 850 for a similar intercooler. The bell would have about 2" longer tubes in the cores but Im not sure how much cooling difference there would be. Ive seen some charts that show the vertical flow intercoolers cooling better and of course Massively outflowing side to side intercoolers. Anyone interested in verticale flow intercoolers should check out the flow charts and eficiencies at this link.

I believe the huge cooling advantage in the verticle flow intercooler comes from the fact that puttint 1000 cfm's quickly through a small long runner core, will be less effective then slowly moving 1000 cfm's through a huge, short core. More cold surface area to be in contact with, for longer periods of time. Apparently having a huge volume in your intercooler might give you a tiny bit of loss in throttle response, but the gains in better cooling and almost no pressure loss are nothing to complain about. Basically you will make more power on the same boost level if you are referencing from the compressor because of the lower pressure lose, and of course getting a denser charge. Then you could probably even rase the boost a little.

Here is a cheap home made one with 2.25" in/out for someone with lower power goals.

I am running the smaller one (with same side outlets) on my car. It works great. Planning on upgrading to the first one you linked to.

Im gonna push my pos 20x12x3 evo endtank intercooler till I definitly know its hogging power, then maybe Ill pay for a real intercooler :P. I want one of those opposing endtank verticle flow treadstones bad.

Wow I hadn't seen that Treadstone intercooler Ondonti posted. That looks like the ultimate intercooler, but I'm not sure how the plumbing would work with the end tanks like that. I'm sure some cutting would be involved. $429 doesn't sound bad at all considering what the generic Spearcos cost.

Thats a wicked IC, perfect tank setup too. Just like mine, :thumb:

Yeah, I used to think the large NPR was THE intercooler to use in our cars. Then I realized the end tank configuration wasn't the greatest, and they require a lot of plumbing to put in.

If I get this intercooler, I'm just not sure if I'd put it in the Shelby Lancer or Spirit R/T. Hmmm.

same kind of design, but cheaper. I haven't heard anything on this one yet?

This one is a different design but I think it would work very well. Price it right too.

Both seem like good IC's and they both listed the pressure drops.

Did you see how much the 2nd link was for a Tial external wastegate setup- :thumb:

if you are going side to side, I would rather get this one. Same core, and a LOT cheaper

Still nothing compares to that treadstone with opposing endtanks.

Now, I'm liking that one!!!!!!!

Might be a good upgrade to my twin Probe units.

I'm even looking at their twin turbo unit. All I can say is, "WOW!!!"

Thanks for the ideas guys. I've decided get another NPR for my Shelby Lancer and get a really nice intercooler (like the Treadstone) for my Spirit R/T someday instead. The large NPR should flow more than the Lancer's engine will ever need.

Of course, the plumbing will be very similar to my Omni GLH which has exactly the same NPR intercooler.
