Coworker has a problem. When the car first starts up (for about 1.5 seconds) or when the car is idling after warmed up, it rattles pretty bad. We are confidence it is the lifters are not pumping up all of the way. They had ran it low on oil real briefly, but got new oil in it, etc. You barely blip the throttle past idle and the rattling goes away. When the idle settles, it is back rattling. Could it really be something with the oil pump and pressure?

How do you get rid of it?

Do you have any way to verify the oil pressure? That would shed a lot of light on the situation. Either way it doesn't sound to good.

Did they change the oil AND the filter? If not get the correct oil filter, common problem on the turbo VW's.

the way to solve the problem is to take it to the dealer and let them fix the POS.

Don't be a hater Jay, I've got 115K trouble free miles on my 1.8T Passat. It gets 24-26 MPG, hauls the kids around in saftey with 8 airbags, decent stock 200W stereo, huge trunk that swallows up 4 sets of golf clubs, and with a 1.1Bar chip and custom exhaust it is suprisingly fast. Got any cars with those kind of stats

Oh, I didn't know the Caprice's, Intrepid's, and 300's were turbo cars:p

Just in the last couple months I've been warming up to the idea of an upgraded turbo:eyebrows: 40 more WHP would be just terrible:D...

I call foul again.....nobody specified turbo!!!!:blah::cool:

Frank, it sounds more serious than just lifters unless Brad is correct about the oil filter.

Well,
Just for reference... check the air pump on these. My mom's beetle makes a sound mistakable for engine noise. The case on them is 3 pieces held together with these WUSSY aluminum rollpins. They tend to vibrate loose and fall out.
Good luck!!

Well they are taking it to the shop on Monday to get the oil pressure checked. That will tell all.

Frank I work at an Audi dealer and our A4's with the 1.8T's had a sludge problem. Its a pretty massive undertaking involving something as simple as running a BG chemical flush through the motor, cleaning the pick up screen and cleaning the pan, to long block and turbo replacement, all ventilation hoses and turbo oil feed lines. Audi is good about picking up the tab if all the maintenance records are in order. Some of the VW's and A4's share the 1.8T engine codes, but ventilation system may be different. For example a TT 1.8T is different than an A4 1.8T. A few things interchange, but there are 4 different 1.8 engine codes for A4's alone with the 1.8T

yes the air pumps do get pretty loud
Frank see if the noise seems to louder at the rear of the head
closer to the trans
they have a hyd. cam chain tensioner back there
the timing belt comes up the front sends power down the exhaust cam
then a chain links the it to the intake cam
they do have sludge problems causing it stick
the tensioner has plastic guides that could go bad
some of the tensioners have a elect. plug on them that puts tension on the chains to change the timing for emissons reason usually at idle or when its cold
