I recently pulled the head of my hurt engine and it has HUGE wear on the cam and followers. It was a s60 cam with the hardened sliders from mopar performance. There's NO WAY I'm using another slider cam after seeing what 50,000kms (31,000 miles) has done for wear.

My question is, Why do some people ues the 88 tbi cam over the 88 turbo cam? I can get either and I would like to know why the choise was made to use the tbi cam.

Has anyone done testing before/after turbo to tbi cam swaps? Thanks in advance-jaim

Funny, I'm thinking of going to sintered iron followers and 87 sliders on all my daily's... that is the BEST stock cam out there. S60'S had wear issues ...

The best cam for what type of setup Ken? I went with the 88 TBI roller as it was readily availabe, but I have read that it is not ideal at really high (20+ lbs.) boost.

2.2L with the 2 piece. The 87 cam has just run the best for me. Never had any issues with it. All the roller style cams I've had have actually been noisier. And the throttle response was just not as crisp.

Perhaps I should specify some other things about the engine.

Give or take 20 psi boost, modified 1 piece that will outflow any unmodded 1 or 2 peice, tbi style manifold, hybrid turbo, 2.5 in exhaust, ported head, plans on producing possibly 280+ hp and 300+ tq

2.2L or 2.5L? (either will make those goals at 20 psi with the rest of the set-up you describe)

it's a 2.2 30 over. Any feedback on the roller cam?

The Taft S2 is the rollerized version of the S60 and makes good power. Theres a thread on TD.com about it. Someone dynoed a bunch of cams back to back, pretty cool.

The reason they say to use the 88 TBI cam is it has more lift and duration over the 88 turbo cam, :thumb:

Thats the link, kind of a long read but worth it.

I have heard that the S60 cam and the MP 314 cam have bad wear problems. I replaced my worn slider cam with an '88 TBI from the JY
and I have been very pleased with the noise reducion and drivability.
The price was $10 for the cam and roller followers
 If there is a JY near you, and you can get one that cheap, why not try it? If I remember right, the TBI has a bit more duration than the turbo version, but that is about it.

Yep, the S60 ramp angle is to severe and the slider digs in, hence the rapid wear.

You don't need to tell me.:(

The taft s2 cam looks like a good cam for me too.

I've heard a lot of complaints about the S-60 Cam wearing out, but I wonder how many of them are due to it not getting sufficient oiling.

Heads that originally came with a slider cam have little ports in the #2,3,4 cam caps that spray oil onto the cam lobes. Most roller cam heads don't have these since the roller cams need less lubrication.

Now, put a slider cam into a head without the lubrication and I imagine the wear would be accelerated.

Just a thought...

ignoring peak HP, the S2 cam in that comparison has a 10x better power band then those other cams. Even if it made less peak HP it would still be much faster at the track.

Unfortunatley Dave, oiling is not the issue. People have tried cryo treating, coatings to no avail, its the grind, its all wrong for a slider setup.

Im using the FM475 with MP folowers and have been for close to 20k miles and I like it,Id probably go bigger and roller if i had it to do over again or when i do have to change it,if I dont go with a 2.0 from a neon.

I can't beleive I've been so lazy to not consult the 2.2/2.5l performance book that lives in my book case. He're's the info I found.

The information does not have 1988 turbo cam specs.
84-87 turbo 1 and 2 240-240 intake and exhaust duration, 20deg overlap, 108 deg centerline , sorry no mention of lift.

84-87 n/a 244-244 duration, .430 lift, 28 overlap, 110 centerline

88 2.2/2.5l n/a 236/232 duration, no mentions of lift, overlap, or centerline.

Does anyone have specs on turbo 88 cams? I think I'm going to have to cheap out on the cam at this point, because the rest of this build is costing alot.

Rampage^^^ do you have any specs on your cam?

Cams are way down on the list of mods to these cars.

Lift on the 87 slider is .430

Agreed^^^ but this engine already has quite a few mods already. I was just wondering between the 88 turbo and non turbo cams. My powerband will already be higher than factory, so I wanted a cam to take advantage of that.

My advice is to hold off a few months... I have a gut feeling something might be on the way.....
