I'm converting my charger over to a GLHS style airbox, and I was wondering if the battery was supposed to rub against the airbox?

Or was there a smaller battery for the glhs?

Even the general dimensions of a charger battery as i have never had the proper size one in it before.

no. the glhs got the same battery as the regular T1 cars.
it's tight, but the battery will be about 1/4" from the glhs airbox at the closest corner.

as i recall, if you are using a G or P body T2 airbox and bracket in an L body you may have issues with battery clearance.

thanks for the info, I have a GLHS air box and bracket, it must be just the battery then. The problem is I got one for an 86 charger..:confused2:

any one have the dimensions?

All L-bodies to my knowledge use a Group 26 battery. The airbox bracket is specific to the GLHS though, so if you're using one from another car, there will be clearance issues. About the only other batteries that are smaller would be the ones for Hondas and smaller imports, but those are too tall to clear the hood.

CDN: what you might want to do is measure your battery tray (subtract perhaps 1/2" all around) and then head to your local dodge dealer and measure up the batteries they have, thats how i got mine.

remember, L-bodies have:
1. posts to the top-back
2. positive post on the right (as viewed from the front of car)

i have seen some L bodies recently where a mirror image battery was being used, it'll work but wont look correct. good luck.

Mirror image would be designated Group 26R (R for reversed terminals). "Group" size is the standardized system for battery dimensions.

here's the Mopar part number on my receipt: BA086525 - EX BATTERY S 1083001

I was looking on Autozones site, they show 2 batterys for 87 Shelby Charger - a group 25 and a group 26. Is the 25 smaller than the 26?

The Mopar battery Marcus86GLHS bought would lead me to belive it's a group 25 as the last two numbers in the part number are 2-5: BA086525

The 25 is a tad longer, has more current delivering capacity & longer reserve capacity.

Still, it's not too long for the car & setup.

There is a later model airbox cover that has a bigger notch on the corner near the battery. These can be found on '88-'89 T1 cars. :thumb:

the numbers mean group 86 525 cranking amps and ex for Exide batteries, not sure where he got that group size though, i dont see that anywhere for that car or anything like it, actually Mopar doesnt even use those numbers anymore (EX) since like 2 years ago, they switched to number ending in AA and starting with BB now, they are Inserstate batteries. I show group 26 with optional group 25

I just had two side-by-side here last month--GLHS and GLHT. I think the key here is in the size of the battery pan. They use the same one, mounted to the same holes in the frame.

Airbox on the GLHS is close to the corner of the battery, but does not rub--about 1" or so clearance.

Routing of wires/cables in and around the battery pan has to be done just right or the (+) terminal will not reach the battery post.

Also, the front edge of the battery pan has a lip on it that the bottom edge of the battery has to pop into. If you don't do this it won't sit entirely flat and will contact the airbox.

Thanks, that makes more sense.
