If I had my time to go over again, I would do a steel structure with framed-out space inside, exactly the same way. I built my shop with a double-insulated closet for my air compressor with lines built into the walls and regulators in recesses. I also have a full bath in my shop. But you are certainly doing it the right way.

Very nice Johnny. Brings back memories of when myself and my old roommate built a garage at his place. Thanks for the pics.

I also have a full bath in my shop

That (or a shower) and a bathroom would have been nice. But would have cost "much". As I would have had to put in a separate septic. So I bought a used chemical out house for $200 and put it between the shop and the storage container. I am putting a sink outside the shop that drains into a rock filled catch basin, which is legal.

Given what I know of Cordes and what I know of Cordes' friend, that would NORMALLY scare me. However, after seeing the garage they built, I was very impressed with their work. :thumb:

Looks fantastic Johnny! You know, if you build it, they (more turbo mopars) will come! Good for you that it's built in the middle of "no where", otherwise, with such a nice place to work, you'd have every TM'r within a 50 mile radius coming over to "do a quick project". :D Wish I had the space to have a shop like that! it's just about big enough to house all my parts I can't seem to let go (also known as crap).

Mike

PS Though I didn't say it then, it was a pleasure to meet/hang out with you at SDAC, I think I'm going to have to make arrangements to have some of that pizza fed-ex'd out here!

Building the home was a lot of time and work also.
It is a three part factory built house. Making the driveway,
home site and all the utilities was major!
We lived in a camper for 8 months while doing this.
Here are a couple photos showing a little of the driveway being made and the home.
This is what you see when you drive up the driveway. The front of the home faces the view, and the front porch/deck is not built yet....

Glad to see your dream come through. I have had plans for 5 years to add a 3 car garage with a vaulted ceiling for lift height in the middle bay.
I can get a "prototype" Hunter 2 post lift for free but it is worn out and the parts would have to be custom made.

I am not sure. I don't see a name on it. A tag says 9000 lb. capacity.
I also know I can walk up straight under a car when it's on the lift.
Some I looked at I could not do that.
It has chain instead of equalizer cable.
Has two hydraulic rams.
17 in. x 17 in. base plates.

Side to side, but it requires modification on the strut towers because it incorperates camber plates. It's a REALLY nice peice...I've had it for a while, but never installed it becuase of the mods needed. I finally found a way to accomplish the mods without using a plasma cutter or torch.

Wow, I would say that is definitely a dream build. From the looks of it here was A LOT of planning involved. I plan to buy my own lot and build how I want to some day. So did you do most of the excavation or did you know some people? I wouldn't know where to start. I'll be doing good to finish the mini barn in the back yard.

Johnny
09-11-2009, 09:17 AM
I had a pro do most of the excavation, he didn't return to finish it because of rain. He picked up his machinery and never returned. He told me he would not bill me because of not finishing it. I rented a bobcat and finished it myself a couple weeks later. I then dug the foundation myself by using a hand shovel. 20 inches deep and 20 inches wide.
I made and set up the forms for the concrete pour. But hired the concrete done.

Well only provides about 2 gallons a minute. So we pump into the tank as a buffer so we don't run out. Hard to imagine with as much rain as we get we have such a slow well. It's 160 feet deep. But at least we never have run out!

Makes sense.

We had our well redrilled about 8-9 years ago by now due to the originals cast iron casing construction (house was built in early 70's) breaking down and causing rust in the water. The new well wasnt properly flushed after being drilled so its got flow issues. about 175 gallons and its done for 1/2 hour before the pipe refills. Real pita when taking a shower and the water cuts off...

Got the front of my water tank building done and one of the doors on. Doors will not be the same width. The larger left door won't be used unless we need to work on the pipes. The right one is access to an area for garden tools. The smaller right door makes it easier to open and close for my gal.

Added the one way traffic one because I've had it for years and needed to go somewhere.
Added the welding sign over my welding room door. My grandfather used to be a welder and it is from his shop. A very old hand painted sign.

Not a big beer drinker either, but while I managed the Earl's Store in Lawndale, CA, I had a neon sign shop for a neighbor (been there since the 70s) and moved, leaving HUNDREDS of signs behind, most not fully functional... Being the type that can't stand to see "perfectly good/valuable" stuff tossed into a dumpster... Well, I've got a few to spare!;) It wasn't all signs either, got a 60s Husqvarna, well most of one! Thought I could fix it and have a cheap dirt bike....

My little project got a boost today. Dug the hole the other day, 4 ft deep.
Bought the parts yesterday to make the "cage", as seen in the photo.
I think I got it welded up to be pretty strong.
Used 10 bags of 90 lbs each of concrete mix. (That's 900 lbs of concrete!!!)
The piece you see held by bolts/nuts will be coming off and a 13 ft pipe will be welded to it
then re-installed. The I'll do it all over again with the second one. Project "C" is what I call it,
you will see what it is as it goes along

Although the coast gets plenty of wind, I am 20 miles inland and between two hill ranges, in the Daniel's creek valley. So we do not get enough wind for a wind turbine. All we get here is a small breeze.

Brought home two lengths of 8 ft long boxed steel and some flat plate.

Related to the shop, I just spent all my extra time putting up new building. I have a 2500 gallon water tank that stores my well water. It needed covered to stop it from freezing, keep the sun off in summer and just to look better. So here are a few photos of it going up. I made it so it would look like a mini version of the shop.

Just curious, why do you need a holding tank for the well water? Is it hard to get water from the wells there?

Everywhere here we just draw it right from the ground to the house.

Johnny
08-18-2011, 07:30 PM
Lots of water here, but the well is slow, only 2 gallons a minute.
So we store it in the tank becuase when using it we have a buffer against
Running out.

Mopar318

Worked on the cover's poles today.
One is ready for paint, the other is half welded up.
Flanges for the base are welded on.
Top and braces are made and welded on...shown in the photos.

Will be a challenge to pick them up and place them in position.

I might rig this up again. See the steel structure standing behind the truck? I put them up building the shop with it. Worked pretty good.It is a 4x6 with a steel hoop at the top, used with a come-a-long. The 4x6 is stabilized strongly into the bed of the truck and makes a movable crane of sorts.

As I'm in the planning stages of building a shop is there anything you would have done different? I liked how Jackson had his setup with the front being heated and the back for storage. I'm planning on something in the 40x80 to 50x90 area splitting it in half front to back. Thinking of going with 14 foot side walls to have plenty of room for a lift. I would like to have some sort of a office area but am thinking of doing that as a seperate section either off the front / back / side as to not use up real estate inside the shop. Having running water with a bathroom / shower is in the plans as the shop will be a few miles from the house. Was thinking of prepping for in floor heat before doing the concrete as it would be cheap to do at the time.

Mixed by hand (hoe and wheel borrow) 1260 pounds of concrete mix this afternoon.
Made a 4 ft x 8 ft sidewalk next to the side of my shop. Will continue it for 42 ft total.

I needed to do this 2 years ago, finally got started today. I needed to do gutters or
a french drain, but my decision was to build a 4 ft wide sidewalk that slopes away
from the building. On the part that is away from the building there will be a short
concrete block wall. Water will run away from the building, stop at the short wall
and then run down toward the end of the building. Then to a french drain to the
creek down below.
This will also give me a place to add a small shelter for my sandblaster and
stainless wash sink.
On the one photo you can see the damage from washout taking place.[/FONT]
This will correct that.

Johnny

The plan is to build a short concrete block retaining wall at the edge of the walk for the water to hit then run down hill toward the creek. A french drain will start at the concrete and run to the creek.
But yes, I agree, it needs farther work to fulfill what it is needed.

Got the block work done enough to add the sink into position. Also poured footing for adding more to the retaining wall (back to the right of the yellow shovel handle). The black wire and black pipe going over the concrete is going to be relocated. And the green plastic over the well head will change. That's one of the reasons for this project. Now on to plumbing the sink and a hose bib.

Liftmaster 8500? I installed one of those in my shed and have a second to install on another door. I may end up with 4 of them eventually. They're so much easier to install. Took the most time running the power from the breaker box. I have to get the overhead door company back because when they installed the drums they mounted them to far in and when the door gets all the way up the cable rubs on the side of the door tripping the cable switch because it bounces. Sucks because they are going to have to unwind the springs on all 4 doors to move the drum.
