View Full Version : Got a problem - need some help

Got my lebaron running finally.
Have all the vacuum lines run and attached firmly - that I can tell no leaks.
Waste gate arm moves freely and checked with pressure before I put it on the car and worked great it is attached.
Timing is set correctly to the best of my knowledge - cam/crank and distributor - guys helping me set it.
Now...
The car is a dog - complete and will not get out of its way with everything intact. I might get 5lbs of boost but takes forever to get there and no pull.
The car is slightly better with the line of the waste can and it will overboost but it is still a dog. It gets boost around 4-5K but you can not tell it is a turbo car - no pull no tire spin.
My question is where to start looking for the issue???
I have had a stock TII intercooler set-up on on it with the same results along with a k&N cone filter with a straight pipe on top and also bov with the same result on both.
When I first fired it up after 6 mo of being down and let it run it was ok idling and such but when I moved it around the tranny was sluggish but not seems much better but no firm shifts or boost like it had before.
Stock settings and computer, only thing different is a slightly ported intake, 2.5 inch exhaust and 52 mm throttle body.

Also forgot to add that timing is set stock, no mbc, good oil pressure and a/f gage under load is right in the middle where it should be.
Ask anything else you might need to know.
Thanks

Boost leak would be my first check, how are your charge pipes? You don't happen to have a T1 hose to swap on real quick to rule out the IC setup?
Nevermind, seems you tried that, had to re-read...

I would double and tripple check the cam timing. I have had the same results with just slightly off timing.

I figured mostly it could be the timing.
Going to check it tonight when I get home and go from there. Also going to double check my vacuums and lines are connected right and tight
It was just really odd that I could hit overboost and had no true power - only way I got anything was to floor it then it would move some and gradually ramp up.
Felt good to drive it on the road again under its own power instead of mine for a change.

Actually sounds like my race car when I had the roller cam with the square tooth sprocket, retarded 4 degrees.
Got the adjustable cam gear, advanced it 4 degrees and knocked 2 seconds
off my ET.
Isn't that the same setup you have? I know you have a roller cam and we used a square tooth belt....

If that is true I think you found the problem.

That could possibly explain the situation.
It is a 87 block TI 2.2 with a 88 roller head with square tooth cam gear. I believe though the one that was on the lower end before was a square tooth but not positive - will see tonight.
Looks like I will be hunting for a 4 degree key or a cheap adjustable cam gear.
If you have one for sale get with me.

Well local shop is getting me a 4' offset cam key so I can pick it up Wed.
Did not do much to the car tonight but ran it some and drove it to look for any more leaks and see what else might happen.
Now with the line on the wg can I can power brake and run the boost up to around 14-15 and I let off.
Car just sits there as if I had a trans brake on it - could the tranny be screwed?? It shifted and performed great before I started working on the engine - all we did was disconnect the motor and pull it and left the tranny and tc in the car.
I did though run new tranny cooler lines and not sure if they can go on backwards - ??
I also pulled codes on it right now.
12 - battery - recently disconnected
13 - map sensor, vacuum - I have to reverify I had good connections and everything is hooked up right
22 - coolant sensor - recently checked the timing on it
45 - overboost monitor - did hit overboost once on yesterdays run when it was crawling up to speed like a dog
I figure something is up with the map sensor and vacuum - going to mimic what is on my omni and also maybe swap the map sensor out since they are both stock ones.
Little by little and great patience I am working on getting it figured out - not like the good old days of carbs and no electronics or vacuums everywhere.
Any help would be appreciated - like to be able to drive it by the weekend for a greater distance than 1 mile....

My van was doing the exact same thing. I put more preload on the wastegate rod and that took care of it. I dont know your turbo set up though...

Stock mits with 2.5 swingate and the can and arm are moving freely and hooked up.
The vacuums are just a bear but I am planning on replacing the lines come Thurs or Friday and put the 4' key in if I get it and need it.
Would be nice if it would wake up - good thing is that my leaks have come and gone....

My guys localy got me the small v8 key so I need to get one.
Anyone have a spare 4' key they like to sell cheap and ship to me quickly?
I can not find them online (single 4' key not the set) - Jegs lists a set then a 2, 4, 3 key but I need to call and see what they are. Would do a adjustable cam gear if it is cheap since this will be my dd and I not go nuts on it.
Contact me if you have one and any other ideas on my issues.

Worked on the lebaron last night until 11 pm.
Vacuums were all ok and run right but the timing was 1-2 teeth off from where it should have been so I had to tear into that and re-set all the timing marks and lines.
Buttoned it up and it is back to normal. Idles good but over-boosts with the standard vacuum lines run with no boost controller - will look into that and just lay off the throttle plus watch the boost gage.
Have to run the exhaust correctly but serves the purpose for now and also change the tranny fluid out this weekend.
Happy to get it running correctly and on the road - drove it to work with no problems except the speedo and cruise cutting in and out but I think the sensor got bumped or there is a loose wire that I can fix tonight.
Will get some good gas and a little cleaner in the tank and drive it for about 500 miles and then change the oil out with some fresh synthetic.
