I got a lot accomplished today. I removed the head on my R/T because of the typical coolant leak from the back corners of the head. The previous owner had the head gasket replaced at a 76 gas station just before I bought the car off him. I spent most of the time shaking my head because so much stuff was half-assed... Anyway, here are some pics of the corners to show what causes the leak. This is after less than 4K miles by the way.

Super-duper high-res for the guys that want to do some closer inspection.

I can't tell for sure, but that isn't part of the old gasket that was left on there is it? Is so, half assed doesn't even begin to describe that process.

Wow, what a crap job. I would say it looks like they've use a grinding disc and rounded all the edges off. If I was a betting man, I'd say your block needs decking.

You nailed it. Tons of old gasket material on there. I'm going to check it out with a straight edge and a feeler gauge. It looks like they used some kind of scotch brite pad or something. I guess I'll be getting my spare short block rebuilt sooner than I thought.

Not me. I knew when I bought the car that I'd have to re-do everything. As soon as he said he had his 'mechanic' do all the work I knew everything would be f----d up. To tell you the truth, I'm surprised the gas station mechanic used an actual TIII head gasket and not a standard Felpro T1 gasket... The head seems to be in good shape though.

Well, at least you knew what you were getting into. That sure beats the alternative.

I checked out the head. The cams lobes are smooth as well as the rollers on the rockers. I think I got lucky there at least... I dont have calipers but I measured the distance between the deck surface and the valve cover sealing area with my super-calibrated ruler and it looks like it's just a hair above 5". I need to get the rest of my tools from my parents house and I'll get a precise measurement.
