Well I went and got my new laser yesterday.
I popped it outa gear to roll it onto the flat bed and jumped out.
We got it up there and strapped down so I go to throw it back in gear (reverse to be exact) and it wouldn't budge.
Looked at it like WTF and and it has a reverse lock out on it!
Its an 86 so it should have an a525. Is that right???
From my knowledge the a525 didn't have a reverse lock out (the GLHS doesn't).
Am I wrong?

The lock out is part of the shifter framework underneath. You have to push it down and over to the left to get R. Is that what you are referring to?

yes that is what I am refering to. But my question is whether those came on the a525's? I haven't been able to pop the hood on the car and check the tranny tag since the hop pop thing is totally broken from the inside and popping hood on a first gen from the outside is a pain and I didn't have time between putting my ttop laser back together and unloading the sunroof 5 speed laser.

Cable shifted cars had the reverse lockout ring, rod shifted cars had you push down for reverse.

like down through the floor board to get reverse because i cant get reverse on my 85 shelby charger

you really do push the stick down to the floor board and up by first to get r i feel stupid

lol Well that's why I was asking what turbokid was asking. I didn't understand what the question was, I mean Reverse is down and over. It's all I've ever known. :)

lol this has a lift ring
Then you move it to the left
In the GLHS with an a525 you dont have to do anything.
Thats what I thought I had in the car (thats what came standard anyways).
I am going to tear into the car a little tomorrow and I will have to look at the tag on the tranny

That's something I haven't seen before, but then again I've only owned the Charger until now. These other guys have seen it all! Either way, the 525 rocks a$s!

Yep all the cable shifted cars had the lockout ring until '90 when the A523/568 came out with reverse under 5th. The shifter changed a bunch of times but they all worked the same.

More like the 525 blows a$$;) the 525 came rod shifted in the L bodies and I believe all other bodies were cable shifted.

You take that back! With the exception of poor gear ratios for the city and a factory rod shifter that's as weak as bossel wood, they are rock solid... :-|

my rod shifter looks ok so far but does the linkage break or wear fast or somthing? why would they suck?

Plastic close to 500*+ temps = dry rot and brittle rod ends They just can't stand up to the heat after 20 years. Most other transmissions, if not all, were cable shifted and didn't have the issues as much if at all. And they aren't rated for a lot of hp or torque if I remember correctly, under 200?

well i agree then i'd rather have a tank of a tranny and mess with a few rods then have no power:)

Ya the 525 is not a powerhouse tranny by any means.
Mines a cable shifted a555 =)
I finally got the hood open (ever had a hood pop break on a first gen gbody?)
The gfx wrap around the bottom so you gotta get your hand inbetween the grill to find the pop.

it's better than the nothing that was there before though. :)

Well that explains the lock out. :)

all 525 shifters have the same reverse lock-out feature, whereby the shifter must be depressed downward then moved the the left and up to engage reverse..........BUT there is one exception that can explain why some folks w/ an a-525 can engage reverse without depressing the shifter downward:

the main shift torque-tube is not adjusted correctly.

if you can engage reverse w/o depressing the shifter on an a-525 then the main torque-tube to shifter spline is rotated and locked down too far to the left, but then you will not be able to engage 5th gear, which is all the way to the right and up.

the factory shop manuals describe the adjustment procedure.

Yeah there are alignment marks on the shifter underneath. I have to adjust mine usually one time after I hook everything back up.

Hey turbo kid if you end up needing one of these vintage 525 shifters I know where ones at. They are getting hard to find in the first gen variety.
