Ive heard that there were clips made to help keep the rod shifted trans linkage together, then the other day I noticed one of my cars has them.

Where can I get more??

Find some think aluminum and make your own! I know you can do it Clay, I believe in you.

oh I could do it, but factory ones are spring steel. I work in aluminum, I would trust zip ties to last longer w/o fatigue ;)

lol Agreed. Try doing the rod shift setup I'm running. Works great and very reliable. :) I'll help you even. :)

Mopar does have some of the nylon/rubber "heim" joints left though--$35e.

minigts-- I am building one of your shifter setups right now. I opted to cut threads on a set of original shift rods (had two sets, both worn out) for the new SS ball joints though, versus the SS rods you spec'ed out. Using thin SS jam nuts/split washers they adjust right down to original end-to-end spacing.

Great DYI article (thanks!) and the pricing of the parts wasn't bad.

nope, but there were only 5 left in the country.

those nylon heim joints that were 7 dollars that are now 35 dollars they have over 1200. goes figure we have a ton of the parts so lets jack the price sky high and then in two months lets sell the whole batch for $50 bucks to a local junkyard

What's the part number on the plastic pieces? I only need one and don't want to do the heim conversion until I know the tranny is good.

p/n:4348401; listed as "ball joint" @ $36.70e on the sheet I have dated 7/14/08. I had the parts guy look it up while I stood there--it should be #33 on the exploded-parts view.

Seriously though, unless you have a show car, or plan to eBay these things for $70e, I'd look at minigts's conversion project. I just converted mine to SS and they're great. I happened to have a spare set of bad rods so I used those instead of the SS ones listed in the article.

Used to have a turbo Lancer (1986?)--basically a grandma-car with a smokin' 2.2L T1 and a 5-speed, that had a cable-shifter with similar ends on it. We were in the middle of a funereal procession on a busy road when one of the nylon sockets popped off the tranny. Factory should have used something heavier, knowing that they would seldom get lubed, and had to be disassembled for a clutch job.
