View Full Version : Removing rice (tint)

Okay here's the story: sold my car to a kid, basically he riced it out... sprayed on tint to the tail lights and the turn signal lights. Bought it back, time to de-rice.

Is there any way to remove it? I heard using the foam to clean windows might work. I know thinner will distort the plastic. I really don't want to buy new tail lights and such.

Ideas???

Try Castrol Super Clean, at full strength. I know it took the paint off my motorcycle engine (oops!)...

maby window tint remover,or strong isopropanal alcohol I know the 99%stuff we use at work will take paint off and it dosnt hurt plastic.

I've heard that soaking plastic parts in bleach solution will clear fogged lenses, perhaps that same solution will remove the tint spray?

If that doesn't do the job I'd try simple green or the generic windex with ammonia in it. Ammonia loosens tint adhesive really well.

I too have heard tha amoinia works well. I would start with the less caustic stuff and escalate as necessary.

If its not on too thick you could try polishing it off. That stuff is usually on pretty thin, and unless he took a scuff pad or something to the lenses before he painted them, a little plastic polish/rubbing compound will take it right off. Plus it will polish the plastic in the process.

lmao. That's great.

By polishing it off, you mean like Mother's Mag Wheel polish??? I have boat-load of that stuff. I'm not too sure on what exactly to use. Ill try some Windex with ammonia, I don't really care. If I ruin them I already have some new ones coming.

Then save the trouble and simply install the new ones, work these over after they are off and re-coup your money :thumb:

I had to remove it off of my Daytona. The method is to take RV bug remover with razor blades and go to town.

Sand with 400 grit and work your way to 1500 and then buff. They will look better than anything else you could do to it...better than new. imho.

I'd spend your time cleaning up the new ones and toss the old ones. The plastic buffs out nice with some fine grit buffing compound. I Sprayed my tail lights on my 91 Daytona with Tint Spray. Made it look 10 times better. The Red Tail Lights really didn't look good with the Silver and Orange blast paint. I also took my time and clear coated them also. Is it a really bad job done to the lights that you want to change them? Maybe throw them in the FS section and see if anyone wants tinted lights.

Do you have any photos of the tinted lights? I didn't see any on your site and would like to see what they look like. I thought the lights on daytonas were already slightly tinted from the factory? Mine have the red lenses inside under a smoked layer.

If it was a darker grey car, those might look pretty decent!

totally. Those lights would look fantastic on a dark colored car. I bet you could unload them in the for sale section relatively quickly.
