I recently bought what I believe is a 555 shifter and cables out of a P-body for my SC, and I think I might have recieved a 523/568 shifter. All my TD experience has been with either the 413 or 525, so I dont know the difference. If someone has a correctly identified picture please post it up so I can compare. Thanks.

Hey Tyler,
Does the shifter have the reverse lockout ring that you have to pull up inorder to move into reverse? If not then it is for a 523/568 or it could just be missing it.

Yeah it has that reverse lockout ring you have to pull up. Maybe this one is just from an earlier model car or something, but its definitally different from the pictures of 555 shifters I've seen.

Check out this site for a few pics, also you can see how to shorten it too if you want:thumb:

Okay this may be easier: Here is the shifter I have.

See, it looks way different then the one in that link, thats what made me think it wasn't a 555 shifter.

Oh and Luke, I'll definitally be down tomorrow to pick up that tranny. I'll give you a call when we're heading in your direction.

That looks like a shifter from a 525 my 84 had one like that until I changed it out. It should work for the 555 just won't shift as nice.

It came out of a P-body, or so I was told. Its definitally cable shifted, so not from a 525.

oh you should check to cable lengths because I had to change cables at the same time because they are attached at different spots at the front of the bracket.

the 525's in the daytonas were cable shifted

Hmmm, the plot thickens.

What kind of ends do the cable have on them? On the trans side.

Ball joint style on the tranny end.

both? you might be j/y searching for the correct trans lever then cause the trans waiting for you has a ball joint style cross cable and the rubber eyelet/stud style selector one.

well there's a 520 in the yard here that I was gonna pull to make a hybrid tranny, so guess I really need it now. Did you ever find the housing for that tranny?

haven't had a chance to look honestly. My storage unit is about 15min away from home and is the not on the way to or from work so I really don't get over to it unless it is a weekend. I know I have one that is bolted to the tranny that I pulled from my car a few months ago, but I should also have one from another trans I tore down a while back. Don't worry either way you'll have one to go with the trans.

Cool, and I think I can take the ball joint off of the 525 so I can use the cables I have. If not I'll use the cables off the car at the yard. See ya tomorrow.

Looks exactly like the 520 P-body shifter that I put in my Omni. It works just fine by the way.

Got one just like that from an 87 P Body. It's very similiar (if not the same?) to the early L body cable shifters.

so did they only update the shifters in the daytona's to the ball pivot style then?

Alright, sweet. Thanks guys for clearing it up, progress will march forward on the car then. I think I can use a combination of the cables I have with the 525 ball pivots to make everything work. And thanks again Luke!

Thanks for the shifter Kyle, looks like everything will work great, I'm just gonna have to change the mount on the tranny linkage to the ball joint, but I can swap it off the 525. Plus after looking at this shifter for a while last night I think I came up with a really good way to make a "true" short shifter for it. :thumb:

Share it if it works out. I have one like that sitting in the garage that I've been wanting to shorten. I hadn't decided what to do about the reverse ring, though.

I had that style shifter in my laser, but when I went to the 555 trans I swapped the shifter and cables to the newer style. I have to say that the shifter feel is much tighter with the newer style shifter. Its really interesting to find out that style shifter was availble in the early P bodies with the 520 transmission.

I think I'm gonna make a go of it with this shifter, I already have it, plus I completely tore it apart and found that is has a press in bushing for the main pivot. This bushing had come loose and made the shifter feel super slopy. I pressed it back in, then tack welded it in a few spots, and it made a huge difference in the feel. I also think that it would be easy to make a true short shifter like I mentioned before. Where most true short shifters move the pivot point up, I can move the lower cable linkage down, which has the same affect. Add a shortened handle and it should make for a pretty sweet shifter. I'll post up pics of my progress when I make it that far.

Here is a question for ya then...... I have the older style shifter in my GLHT. Basically I welded the mounting plate to the floor pan of the car, then bolted the shifter to the base plate. So it is removable.

Will the newer shifter bolt onto the older base??

It was a direct bolt in in my car. I actually bought the shifter before I had the transmission. I had found an 86 Laser XT in a local salvage yard that I was buying the console out of, when I removed the console I noticed the shifter was different than mine, and it seemed to move much smooter. Later I canme to find out that the Laser I had gotten the shifter out of used to have a TII engine in it with a 555 transmission. I cant confirm that but the wiring harness had been modifed for the 86 GLHS LM and it had A555 cables and shifter. So the newer style shifter should bolt right on to the plate you welded in your car. After looking it up on Hollander interchange, it shows a mid year change for the transmission in the Shadow. Aparently you could get an A525 in the early production 87 Shadows, and Lancers (ones made before 8-18-86 ). That would explain the 525 style cable shifters people have found in 87 Shadows.

That's just the early A525/A520 shifter. The Daytonas got it too...may dad's 87 had it. My 88 Shadow had the ball and pot metal piece of crap socket shifter that had the broken reverse lock-out of course. The old style works just fine. It's maybe a little more notchy feeling, but it is solid. If you tighten the big nut and the little press-on one it can be made to feel pretty tight.

Ah, mine must have been loose then. The car only had 30k miles on it, but probably had some spirited shifting done by the previous owner.
