Does anyone know for sure if the gearset for the A555 is the same as the A568? I'm mainly talking about 3-4-5, but I am also curious about 1 and 2 in the '89 A555. The dogs on the gears of 2nd and 3rd are pretty trashed on my A568 and I have the guts of an '89 A555 sitting on my bench. The A568 is not apart, so I can't really check it myself.

I have to take the trans apart again at some point to put another set of new fork pads on the 3-4 fork and/or put new brass on #3. I would be handy if I could put better gears in it too.

Thanks.

Not totally sure Russ (maybe I should just shut my yap:lol:) but I think it has to be the "late" 555 to match the 568. Remember the 'early' 555's had the different end bearings... Someone else can chime in but 'late' started Nov 88 on build date right?

Well, I know the 1-2 assembly completely changed on the late A555 and A523/543/568 using the goofy 2pc "carbon" synchros. The mainshaft had to change too. On the '89 A555 I have, the main shaft looks just like the A568 one but without the bearing race on the big end. The bearing runs right on the shaft just like the older trannies.

So my suspicion is that the gears from this late A555 are the same, but I am also wondering about 3-4 and 5.

They should work I confirmed this with Chris R. a while back.

BTW 5th gear bolts into the mainshaft and isn't formed directly into it so you can use 5th gear from any 523 in a 568 aswell.

Cool, thanks.

Yeah, swapping 5th is an option, though the way I use 5th sometimes I don't think running an A523 5th is a good idea. :) For the record, you do have to keep the input shaft's 5th, though. The early trannies had the helical spline and snap ring while the others were straight-splined with that big nut.

If you have a gearset out of an 89 555 they will work in a 90-91 568. If you are just looking to swap the speed gears. The input shaft in the 89 555 and 90 568 are the same. 91 obviously has the big spline however the speed gears will work.

I actually have a 523 input and speed gear in a 568 at the moment.
