View Full Version : 88 CSX-T - What to do with it?

Ok,

So the time has come to get rid of my CSX-T. I haven't driven the car for at least 4 or 5 years, and I don't see myself driving it any time soon. Currently the car has no engine/trans, and needs some paint work (has a scratch on the driver's side from a bicycle). At this point I have 3 options:

1. Part the car out and recover the $$ I have invested (not a lot).

2. Install a complete 2.5L T1 engine with the original trans and sell the car complete minus the original wheels.

3. Put the original motor back together (more expensive than putting in a 2.5L) and sell the car as a complete numbere'd car (wheels could go with the car for the right price).

This is where I need a little input. If a nice, complete CSX-T is worth $1500-$2000 AND somebody would pay that price, I'd be willing to do the bodywork to the car, reassemble the engine, and get the car back together.

If the car isn't worth that much, I could slap in the 2.5L motor to save some $$ and I'd sell the car for around $1000, only fixing the bad scratch in the paint.

If nobody replies to this thread, I'll part the car out since nobody cares about CSX-T's anymore. Let me know what you guys think, as I have the original owner of an 83 SC begging me to buy his car. If I have 2 L bodies at the house, I might as well make it 3 so we have all 3 body styles, heh.

NOBODY CARES ABOUT CSXT'S??!!!??

Dude. As is. I'll drive out and pick it up. As long as it isn't eaten away by rust.

I have CSXT #930. My brother owned a CSXT in '89. First owner after Thrifty. He has been looking to buy another one, just don't see too many CSXT fixer upper's in the area.

I'd say it is worth $1500 as a numbers matching car with the engine in boxes. You did not say how many miles were on the car. Throw all the original stuff in the hatch and ask the guy begging you for it, to give you the 2 G's and come haul it away.

My feeling is restoration before restifying before parting. Parting is for non-shelby cars that have been hit hard.

And I am the second owner after Thrifty of #162.

So, the car has around 137K miles on it, interior has about 20K on it (was replaced with new seats and door panels recently... sit in the seats and you will feel the difference). I got the car a while back and welded in a few pieces in the floor and sealed the welds with urethane. The car is now pretty much rust free. The car has been reprimed and painted in its life, though I believe all panels are original. I can roll the car out in the sun and take some pictures tomorrow.

I did have this car for sale once... in its current as-is condition a couple years ago and there wasn't any interest. In all honesty, this car could easily be nicer than my 87 CSX, it just needs a little TLC.

Anonymous, let me know what condition you'd like the car and I'll give you a price. I have the original 3.50 F/D trans for the car, but it should really get a new 2nd gear stop ring. I have a spare 87 parts trans (blew it up in my 87 CSX) that has good brass in it. If you'd like I can make the trans crisp again (my original intention) and then the car would be in good daily-driveable shape. This car was last seen publicly... at SDAC in Chicago. It was the car with grease on the bumper at the car show because I had installed the 2.5L engine/trans the night before.

As mentioned, my brother has been looking for a CSXT project for a while. I can't speak for him as to a price range he's willing to go, but he's the type that likes to do things himself, so I can safely say he'd be more interested in it without you fixing anything up.

Do you have the numbers matching block for the car?

Are any of the Shelby parts missing? Dash plaque, steering wheel, rear medallion, valve cover, etc.?

The Shelby items are where we can negotiate on price. All the items are around here somewhere (rear medallion was in a bag when I bought the car), the valve cover is in my garage, and the original (was told it was original, never checked) short block is on a pallet in my garage. Like I said previously, I'd like to keep the lemans wheels since I don't want to try dismounting these auto-x tires (walmart broke the tire machine installing them). I'd also love to keep the steering wheel, since it's one of the few that has the leather wrapping instead of the moulded rubber. I don't need the steering wheel, but if you know where a good condition leather wrapped wheel is for sale, let me know.

I hope somebody will take this car whole, as the more I look at it, the more I want to keep it. The problem is, the car has no use in my collection. It doesn't need to move right away, but it does need to find a new home eventually, preferably sooner than later.

I'll let you know if Anonymous buys the car. I'm going to take pictures tonight (had to find my battery charger and charge the camera).

Although not mentioned in post #1, you do have option 4 as well. That consits of selling the car and all it's parts "as is" to someone willing to restore it - sounds like there are 2 parties interested in doing just that right now.

As far as the tires go, couldn't you just take them to another place like a GoodYear shop and have them dismount them at the new owner's expense (can't be much)?? I'm sure who ever buys this car would want the orginal wheels as well.

I still say, after looking at the pictures, if you put all the shelby specific stuff, and vin specific parts in a box in the car, you have a $1500 - 2000 project car. You need to include those wheels too.

I have all the other parts for the car, minus the hood emissions sticker (not the original hood?) and the shelby tag on the radiator support (if the 88's had them). I can easily fix the paint job, attach the driver's fender properly, and do the rest of the bodywork assembly the car needs.

I can put the drivetrain back to good-working stock, but that's going to cost some $$ and take a little time. I don't have a good mitsu turbo for the car, and the bottom end needs a new set of rings (car had a broken ring when I bought it). I'm sure I can find a mitsu turbo, and fix the transmission, it'll just take a little effort and I want to make sure the car will be worth it when I'm done.

As far as the Lemans wheels go, I just need something else that's 6.5" or 7" wide to fit my 225 50 15" auto-x tires. I have 2 dented original center caps, a Chevy Cavalier center cap, and 1 good condition aftermarket center cap. I like the look of these wheels without the center caps, so I never bothered to get a matching set.

I will be posting the car for sale in the correct forum as-is, and if no deals go through, I will begin restoring the car to a good, original, driving condition with presentable bodywork.

Well I will keep you up to date!
If I get this stupid convertible sold I will be very interested in just restoring it as is
The original paint doesn't look too bad, I can do the bolt on body work and matching, I have a rebuilt motor for it already sitting in the barn, and that car would be looking good in no time!
Hell If you want I could even dismount the tires at my place and ship them back at my expense!
I have a tire machine so that isn't as issue
Let me know your plans on the car

This car is now officially for sale so I can comply with forum rules. This thread will probably be closed anyway since I guess it's technically a "gauge interest" thread if you look at it that way. The link is below:

if your autocross wheels look like mine, id find another set of wheels to use(that is alot of abuse to put on rare wheels IMO).

Im not autocrossing, I have a set of pizza's with Kumho Victoracer tires on them if you need...

It's not that I don't have enough wheels... I have at least 10 sets of aluminum turbo-dodge wheels, it's the fact that most of the wheels are only 6" wide and I don't really like the feel of a 225 width tire on a 6" wheel. Plus, I like the looks of these wheels a lot better than the sets of 6.5" crab wheels I have.

If the Lemans wheels had all the original center caps, or all correct replacements, I'd probably send them with the car. As-is, the wheels can't have much value, so I'm not sure they're worth risking tearing my auto-x tires by having them removed. It's bad when the tires are worth more than the wheels they're mounted on!
