It has the 3.8 liter engine...does anyone happen to know based on this scant info? I'm doing a filter change for a friend and need to know what filter I need.

A-604 4spd trans. Make sure to use the ATF+4 fluid and adjust the bands.

Well, the thing about this, is that the trans is having problems...as in not shifting out of first. This is on my g/f's grandfather's car, and now he can only drive around town where he don't have to worry about the speed being higher that first would require.
A mechanic friend of their's said that the filter is probably clogged and needs changed, so they asked me to do it. They went ahead and bought the filter, gasket, fluid and everything.

I'm looking for insight on the problem, because somehow I don't think a filter change will help. They're reasoning is that the fluid is still red, not dark and burnt, (even though the fluid has a "burnt rubber" smell) so the trans is probably not shot.
Your opinion, Simon, means more to me by far than any unknown mechanic they know...:thumb:

Its probably stuck in 2nd gear, thats LIMP mode. You need someone to scan it for codes. If your guessing, then replace the input and output shaft speed sensors, they commonly fail and cause your problem. I also don't mean the SDS sensor either, :thumb:

4800878 for input 4800879 for output, lord knows i sold a ton of those, and yea it is prolly stuck in limp mode, if it was stuck in first that thing would be screamin high rpm's everywhere he drove, the trans controllers go bad alot in those too, also the solenoid pack on the side of the trans goes bad, but start with with speed sensors

I changed the fluid and the sensors and it's still stuck in 2nd. It will shift from 1st to 2nd, then stay in 2nd until you restart the car. The fluid was still red, not burnt, but there was quite a bit of "fuzz" on the trans pan magnet, and some metal shavings in the pan.

Today the owner, my g/f's grandfather, told me they hooked it to a diagnostic machine and said that he needs a new or rebuilt trans. He said the cheapest he could find would cost him $1,500 for the new trans and to have them put it in.

He wants me to find out if I can find him something cheaper.

Does anyone know where I can get a rebuilt A-604 cheaper than $1,500??
Would Ramsdell do it? Is shipping really bad on a trans?

My mother paid around $1300 for her 604... rebuilt at a trans shop with all new parts. Her core had a cracked/glued/welded case too!

It still has the reverse kickdown band-inside the case, unless my brain has left the building?? :eyebrows:

So, do you think they might be giving him the shaft?

I don't think so, she got it for $1300, your being charged $1500, not much of a difference to cry about, :thumb:
