Looking for information on the D50's that came with the turbo-charged diesel Mitsu engines.
All I know at this time is that they did exist. Does anyone have a link or information on these?
Co-worker is picking up a 4x4 diesel Ranger, which I've only ever seen one other one. So I start searching and see that Dodge did the D50 also. I've never seen one.

What year ranger is that? My brother has an 84', but they didn't come 4X4 because of oil pan clearance. I think there was 2 different diesel's in the rangers though, because my brother's is the 2.2 N/A one but I do believe there was a 2.3 turbo?

Umm yeah is that the same diesel that was put in the escort???? I know a friend of mine had a diesel escort in high school and even with teenage driving it got 50 mpg. Trust me you would want one after the money you save. I could of bought it for 500 back in the day.. I kick myself now as it would of been a nice swap to an escort GT.

I went to school with a guy that drove a Brown Escort Wagon diesel, it was a chick magnet. I think it was a smaller engine than what was in the Ranger even. I just remember the car was always covered in soot on the backside and it was quite possibly the slowest vehicle I've ever ridden in.
The D50 turbodiesels are hard to come by, I've only ever seen one in person, but there have been a few on ebay over the years.

LOL, well that escort wagon had issues then. My buddies never had any black on it whatsoever and was pretty quiet for a diesel, although his dad was pretty meticulous with the car being an electrical technician at a factory in the maintenance department and having to be on call. This one would light the tires up through 3rd and could go 80 on the interstate no problems.. Its funny how bad a car runs when someone doesn't know how to work on it.

Yes, the Ranger is a 2.3L single turbo Mitsu engine. I believe he's planning a "2.3L Powerstroke" painted down the side.

I thought he said '86, but I'm not sure. If they ever call us back to work, hopefully I'll get a chance to check it out.

Well it says on the thread the 4D55 would pretty much be a drop in for the 2.6. Well that makes some serious shi- possible in this fuel crunk we're in. Veggie oil it and you've got a mill with more potential than a hemi in terms of what it was built for and what you can do with it in todays market.
I would reckon that would be a sweeeet mini option if you can find a 2.6 first gen left or and this is just sick put one in a nice widebody TSI conquest.. Someone will shoot me for that one. There is even an aussy company who sells a turbo kit for this sucker. Its almost 3500 australian though. BTW did a search and a D50 sold on ebay for some stupid money to the tune of 7400 dollars for an 84 D50 turbo diesel 4x4.. For that money I can throw a 4BT in a dakota.

It wouldn't cost near 7400 to put a 4BT in a dakota, unless you count the cost of buying the dakota with it LOL.
You can get a 4BT for around $2000-3000 complete. Depending on what trans you want, $500-1500. Cheapest would be an auto, TH400 but that doesn't even have overdrive. I wonder if a NV3500 has the same bellhousing as the 4500? I don't think a 4500 would fit in a dakota plus they are not cheap at all. The 3500 is in the ram's, pretty common.
Engine bay harness consists of wiring to the alternator, starter, and fuel selenoid.
You would get 35+ MPG though.
I thought about putting a 4BT in my dakota many times, but I don't have 3-4 grand laying around ever.

I did alot of research last year on the CRDI Liberty's.
I really wanted one until I read that it's common for the torque converters to go out.
I'd like to put that motor in a Dakota.

A little off topic but even better for MPG I found a ford escort diesel a rare find in itself with only 60k on it. Heck for less than 2k a car that gets 50 mpg will pay for itself really quick especially with a veggie oil conversion. I think with the 4BT its a question of what you want it for that would make it worth while. My neighbor has an old chevy truck he wants to part out. That would be a possibility, but its chevy though.

We made the transmissions for the CRD Liberty (45RFE) just like the Ram Hemi transmissions except for the specifics to install it into the Liberty (Rear Extension/Adaptor and Oil Pan) and the unit specific Torque Converter. It honesly is the same internals but I'm sure the trans computer had to have its own set up for the lower shift points, etc. I don't know what internally was different in the converters (probably the K Factor for the torque and lower rpm of the diesel) as they were made by Toledo Machining (a Chrysler Plant internally supplied) but someone could always try to use a Hemi converter and see how it would do. The only thing preventing it from being a direct bolt in would be if the flex plate could match up or not. (The looked to have the same pattern but I don't know for sure.) That might fix the early converter issues they had with the lock up not holding up. Just a thought.
