Cop thinks mine is too loud and I have to get it inspected. What can I do as a temp solution to pass this DB test?

How does he figure its TOO loud? did he measure it? what are the laws pertaining to it?

Thats what I asked him. This will be a tale about the RCMP to regail at SDAC 19.

Let's just say he told me there were no DB rules, only cops discretion. Well WTF are they going to measure it with at the inspection, a panel of cops? Give me a brake.

Basically looking for tricks to temp make it quite for test. Steel wool or pop can in there?

What test? if he can't tell you how quiet or loud it is, how are you going to get it tested and by whom?

stick a banana in the exhaust, should quiet it down

How about......A muffler?

I'm sure you have similar laws in Sask. There doesn't seem to be a db limit here either. This is where the srt-4 owners were getting nailed.

I am sure this a case of a cop being an ---. I bet either:
1. He is young and just on a power trip
2. He is old and doesnt like some young guy driving a loud car, but other people with big blocks and no exhaust or Harleys are ok

My first question is, what is your current setup?

If he thinks its too loud he obviously never heard a Harley crapidson. I can hear those things 2 miles away literally. Closest highway is 2.1 miles away and I hear then in my closed up house..

I'd also like to say a guy down the road just bought a new one and it still has stock exhaust and wow it sounds soo good, Quiet yet I can still hear that distinctive harley sound

Who knows, maybe you'll come across a T2 car or something with a good intercooler and have a greata day!:D I'll bet a used muffler wouldn't be more than $5.

Why not throw your stock exhaust on. Even if they say that's to loud if it's bone stock they can't nail you for anything. they'd probably just say get a new muffler for this thing and get outta my shop.

I got a ticket for loud exhaust on my DD 99 Grand AM, it was on the highway. Then I asked the officer about the Harley that rumbled by, he said he normally just turns his head and ignores them. I found that quiet interesting to say the least.

Anyway I had to have someone sign off on the fix it ticket. I used some gutter guard screen to hold some household insulation in the exhaust, I shoved it up there with a broom handle. It stayed fine as I never drive over 35mph on the way. As soon as I left, I got on the highway and it blew right out, lol

This is on my 305 dual exhaust with glass packs s15. If I have to I'll toss mufflers on it.

The thing about noise laws is that officers rarely know the law. Most of them have specific limits and distances and modes of measuring specified, but an officer will only know the "dB limit".

In NY, they're supposed to take an A-weighted SPL measurement from (or adjusted to) 50 feet from the center of the vehicle. For example, our cars are supposed to be 76dB or less at 35mph, and 82dB or less over 35mph.

That means that standing next to the car, you could be pushing anywhere between 90 and 100 dB! (sound follows the inverse square law)

Shove a whole bunch of steel wool in each pipe and get some sorta screen and metal clamps on the inside to keep it in place :P

^+1 did this to pass with a race bullet. then drilled a hole through the pipe to run a nut and bolt. take it real easy goining to the inspection station cause once they get hot it will shoot balls of scorching hot steel wool out :eyebrows:

Personally, I'd just hang a pair of quieter mufflers on it. You can get decent sounding mufflers that aren't too loud pretty cheap, and then you won't have to worry about going through this all over again in the future.

I think you can get an exhaust insert from Jegs or Summit that amounts to a cone that has slots and holes drilled all over it....you simply slide it into the end of the tailpipe and use some sheet metal screws to secure it....easy to remove.

Old Matchbox was too loud with a Borla XR1 (sounded like open exhaust) so at the end I had a Warlock put on....that muffler has a plug that when in place routes the exhaust through the muffler in a S and sounds like a turbo muffler....when the plug is removed it is a glass pack, straight through. The plug is held in with three wing nuts.

An intercooler for a muffler? Interesting concept! Oughta quieten it down quite a bit!! :p

OK, now I'm really confused. Don't you need two pipes for an X or H pipe?
