Are there really any advantages with a 520/555 hybrid transaxle? What are the pluses and the minuses? I hear about huge gains in ET with this transaxle. It sounds almost too good to be true. Please let me know your REAL WORLD experiences. It would be used in a lightened 1985 Shelby Charger making 300+ horsepower. Thanks!

I have a 3.85:1 A555 in my Z. The shift light comes on in 4th at ~6400rpm which is ~123mph.9although it pulls to 7000 (~130mph) I plan to make a 3.50:1 hybrid so that I can get more MPH capability and also sooner in 4th. Additional advantages will be at the launch as I currently spin thru all of 1st and most of 2nd on my best runs.

Without having time to make a logn reply, it's flat out awesome Kevin. The gearing advantage with an L body espescially is great. It sits the car in the torque band for longer in each gear, giving it an almost-an-automatic length gear.

I have a 3.50:1 A-520 in the car right now. Will it be a big improvement over what I already have?

Since the 520 uses different gear ratios for 1-4 than a 555 the 3.50 geared 520 is a gear for gear equivilant of a 555. To put it into perspective, A straight out swap of a 555 for a hybrid was worth 5mph in the same car with the same setup.

You have to look at it this way, the gearing setup used in the stock trans (both 520 and 555) was designed to get a car as heavy as a daytona up and moving in a reasonable amount of time, even behind a 90hp tbi motor in the case of a 520. You don't need anywhere near that much gear to get an l-body moving, much less when you start making north of 250whp.

Funny you mention that! LOL. I am in the process of redesigning the site and making a web based version... here is the old one for now...

+1 Frank sent me this link and it's nice. Should make it a lot easier to answer questions about when the top speed will be, per gear and overall, individual gear ratios, etc. It can start to wear your fingers off having to type out all that info all the time.:thumb:

I went from a 3.50 FD in my shadow to a 3.85, and it was great before I cranked up the boost. Once I started to make some power I really wanted the 3.50 back in the car for the reasons previously mentioned. A little more traction out of the hole sure would be nice.

Aren't the gears the same for an A-555;)

It worked for me when I did that!

Sounds like it would be interesting in a charger.

Frank, that chart is great. I would ask that you add the A-604 vairants to it also. Due to my back injurys I will not be driving a stickshift much anymore. I like the tire conversion chart too. DaveJ
