FAQ for repairing intermittent / dead tachometers on pre-'89 non-digi dash TDs
A very good run through of repairing tachs can be found HERE (http://mywebpages.comcast.net/jeff.barnett/tach.html), though I'm taking the opportunity to add some photos and G-body specific instructions.
Unlike the L-body dash, the G-body facia goes from the headlight switch accross to the right-hand side of the centre console. Its secured by 5 screws tucked under the top edge of the dash, plus one spring clip in the centre, about 5" from the top. To remove it tilt the steering wheel as low as possible, undo the screws, pull the top towards the rear of the car, then lift. Be careful with it - its brittle plastic, and quite flimsy.

The console can then be removed, its held in by 4 black cross-headed screws, once off it can be moved forwards to access the connectors. In a Daytona you may find unplugging the connectors from the right-hand side works easiest, I found this had to be done by touch.

Once removed you can use this opportunity to lube your speedo cable, be sure to disconnect the other end before squirting anything down it! I used hydraulic oil, which seems to have helped by not eradicated a jumpy speedo.
The problem joints that usually need re-soldering are between the arrows in this pic:

These lay closest to the windshield air vent, which is probably why they go first! I found that adding a little solder to each post resulted in a much stronger looking mechanical join.
Re-assembly is the same but in reverse, and much easier when you've seen what the connectors look like :) Everything is keyed so its impossible to put any connector on the wrong way.
