If I remember correctly, years ago I was thumbing through the JC Whitney catalog and saw a Y pipe with a cable operated butterfly built into it.

Anyone know where to get one? There doesn't appear to be any on the JC Whitney site...

its called an exhaust cutout, you can get them in manual(you need to unbolt the cover which is held on with butterfly nuts), cable operated, vaccum operated, or electronic. the electic ones are about $100 for the butterfly/motor piece alone and bolts onto a manual cutout. manual cutouts are about $30. perfect for a street/strip car....or when you just like to be loud some days.....

That would be it, thanks! Just that I don't remember it being 2"...too bad it's not 2.5".

Thanks Murphy for the links, much appreciated! Yeah I knew it was called a cutout, I guess I should have called it that. The link that Speed sent was what I remember thinking of...

I have an old style electronic one. The bolts keep coming back up out off the motor, even using threadlock. So, I took the entire thing apart, grease everything inside, put it back together and used j/b weld on top of the bolts so they don't back out. Works good so far.

The underside of your tuna looks really solid.. BTW on topic.. how loud is the car with that cutout? Do you get some looks when you run it open?

Not much louder than stock when it is just idling or HIGHWAY cruising.

LOUD when you're revving it or at load. You'll hear every pop at deceleration.

I'm too busying driving to care about what other people do.

Can anyone make a comparison of the McCord vs QTP?

Also, stock exhaust at WOT, I only get 10psi. With cutout open, I get 13psi.

spool is like instanteous with the cutout open too.

On the dyno, my full 3" mandrel bent system cost 22 ft lbs and 11 whp with the set-up capped. Uncorking it freed up a lot of power...

from a cutout thread i started long ago

Hmmm if anyone spots any small electric or vacuum ones on sale anywhere, LMK, I might put one on my front bank for reduced pumping loss in 3 cylinder mode.
