Can I use a 3 wire O2 Sensor with only the Black wire connected to signal?

I don't want to wire in the heater wires really, I just wondered if th heater wires have to be connected for the O2 sensor to work. It is not a Daily Driver so I am not worried too much about my gas mileage.
