I rebuilt the head already here
http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1102
I had a lot of slop in the pistons so I decided to go ahead and do the rest.

Pulled the balence shafts and enlarged the oil pump pickup awhile ago.

Rod bearings look pretty good to me for 150k miles

Mains looks a little worse then the rods to me.
http://users.marshall.edu/~kessler8/van/engine/100_0058.jpg
Cylinders still look pretty good. Can't really feel any ridge.
http://users.marshall.edu/~kessler8/van/engine/100_0059.jpg
Pistons however don't look all that great. For now the plan is to go ahead and bore it out and put forged pistons in it. I haven't gotten the crank out yet since I don't have a puller for the timing gear. Already have a thread about that :).

Your bearings looked great... All of them. Crank should need NOTHING done to it.

Out or curiosity, what was the compression reading before the Dis-assembly. Looks like worn pins to me allowing the slop.

Darkwolf

I never thought to do a compression test.

Cleaned somethings up and did some painting. Wish I had thought to paint the head with aluminum engine paint like the a/c bracket and dist before I slapped the head back together. May still do something about that.

Just waiting for the forged pistons I ordered to show up from turbosunleashed.

The Wisecos, ARP rod bolts and head studs showed up today. Off to the machine shop on Monday.

Other then taking 3 weeks its looks like they did a pretty good job. Only thing they goofed up was plugging my oil and water line for my turbo but they are just screw in plugs so no big deal. Now I just need to get off my --- and put it back together over the weekend.

Looks good. What overbore did you go with?

I love new stuff, everything is so pretty and clean, :thumb:

Used to be when I had a stack of new parts ready to go in the car, I didn't sleep till they were on it;) Older now with responsibilities, everything takes longer:o

I can't quite tell from the pics, were the rods 'resized' after the ARP's went in? It's essential with bolt replacement because they will be way out of round with new bolts.

2.2 Wiseco's are very quiet on start up so that's a plus. Don't know about their 2.5's. A bigger plus is that mine have survived a couple of tuning errors:o with no apparant damage so they are hella strong:thumb:

I always use bottle brushes and pipe cleaners to rewash the block before assembly even though the shop already did it. Seems like inevitably there is some machining grit or carbon in one of the passages...

Darkwolf

bores are .020 over and crank is .010 under. Yeah they resized the rods for me. Think tomorrow will be cleaning day and Sat and Sun will be assembly day.

Anybody know what the compression ratio is with the Wisecos? I never bothered to look it up :). They certainly look like they are dished deeper then stock.

Paint, rear main, crank, and pistons are in. Crap keeps popping up and keeping me from being able to work on it as much as I though well that and my lazyness.

Finally have the bottem end together more or less. Should have been done a couple days ago but when I went to install the intermediate shaft and noticed the machine shop had borked my rear bearing when they installed it. Had to order new ones through Napa and just got it today.

Its pretty sad when the best looking part of your vehicle is the engine ;). I was planning to go ahead and get the timing belt on today but I want to spin up the oil pump first and I don't have an oil filter. I'll pick one up when I head out to do some family crap later today.

Looks awesome, who ported the head?

if your not planning on keeping AC, i heard (its what im gonna do) you can take the pully, drill out the welds and pry off the AC part. and then you got less rotating mass.

just tryin to help out!

btw, it looks AWESOME, and i love the colour of the block, what is that hemi orange?
keep up the good work!

The port work is all me. All I did was smooth out the rough stuff so I hardly removed anything.

Its Ford red, aluminum paint, and low gloss black. My camera under the fluorescent lights just makes it look kind of orange. Afraid I am too much of a pansy to go without a/c anymore hehe.

Thanks.

You lost me on that, if the a/c isn't turned on, it causes NO drag. What pulley are you talking about to drill?

Well forgot to pick up the oil filter but its just about done. Just need to put all the accessory crap on and a few other little things. Cant really see it but I have my EGT probe mounted in the #4 exhaust port. Would have went alot quicker if I would quit doing stupid crap. Put the exhaust manifold on first only to remember you can't get to two of the intake bolts with the exhaust mani on, mounted the water line to the turbo only to remember you can't get to one of the turbo nuts, tried to hook the water line to the block for 10mins only to remember there is a fitting that goes in the block first, mounted the water return in the wrong hole in the head, and on and on :). Atleast I lucked out and dodge left an extra oil port in the block they install to feed the turbo and oil pressure gauge and its already the right thread for my oil pressure gauge.

Looks good but honestly, replace the turbo coolant line, it would be shitty to do all this work and have that line leak or let go at the wrong time. Just cut off the crimped ends using a grinder, then install new hose-any parts store, and clamp it. Done.

IT LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Only had one big scare when I first fired it up. Something was making all kinds of clanking rubbing sounds but it just ended up being the dust sheild on the bottom the trans. It fired up first twist of the key and idle smoothly. 60psi oil pressure cold and 30psi hot and the valvetrain is so quiet you can actually hear the injectors now :). I took it up to full temp set the timing and shut it down. Tomorrow I'll change the oil, retorque the headbolts, and hit the road. I"ll have to get around to bending up some brake line or something to redo my 5th injector fuel line and get some new plug wires but they are good enough for now. Still has all the old vacuum lines I am doing away with hanging over the passenger side fender and need to clean up all the wries but that can wait. Now its time to eat.

A 9 meg video of it taken with my camera so its not exactly high quallity. If somebody wants to tell me a decent FREE video converter I'll try to cut the size down a bit.

Regarding to retorqueing head bolts, why and how?

I never retorque the daytona, and it's been 1 1/2year since I did it and it still runs great.

Just a good idea after everything has had a chance to expand and contract. Really not needed but only took a couple extra minutes. Well now not only does it idle it actually drives aswell. Its slow a hell at only 5psi but it is still nice to hear that turbo again. Everything appears to work sofar other then my oil pressure gauge light which will be a huge PITA to replace. I plan to just leave it alone till I have to pull the cluster out for another reason to deal with that. I got rid of all the extra vacuum lines and cleaned up the wires and it looks a bit better but it will be awhile before I get around to doing something about the 5th injector line.

Very nice man. I hope you went out and beat on it, to get the rings to seal properly,

I did a bit but not a whole lot. I did figure out I have the cam timing off a tooth though. It actuall slows down when you floor it and go over 4k rpms :). It was lousy out today or I would have just went ahead and fixed it. Once I fix that I will beat the living hell out of it. I also figured out that my oil pressure gauge's light does work but its about half as bright as the water temp's. Annoying but better then not working at all.

Darkwolf
05-08-2006, 04:08 PM
Well I feel rather stupid hehe. I didn't think to tighten my adjustable timing gears bolts and it advanced/retarded/whatever itself 12 degrees :). Runs a tad better now.

Awesome post....Great to see all the pictures.

What did the rebuild end up costing? Bearings, Pistons, Machine Shop, misc...?

I did a quicky add up awhile ago and came up with $1500 and I think that included my new gauges. I probably forgot some of the little stuff so I would add in another $100 or so. I am afraid to set down and really think about it too much since I might figure out another $100 or three I am forgetting ;).

Lookin nice man! I need to get out that way and see the beast in person. Now that the Sundance is up and running and John's got the trans straightened out in the Daytona, Kanawha Valley Dragway should see a record 3 turbododges this year.:D
