Hi all,

Finally picked up a truck yesterday, been waiting for this one for awhile.

S15 Tahoe with topper, 305 conversion, 4 barrel carb, 3 speed on the floor.

What I want to know is the basic tuning procedures for these carbed engines. Changed the air filter and used a can of carb cleaner on it, checked the plugs and their gap and they are golden brown. I guess I should replace the fuel filter too lol. Would I get a fuel filter for the S15 or something with the 305 in it?

Almost looks like more vac lines on this carb motor than on my turbo.

It would depend on the carb for the fuel filter. My old 86 Pontiac with a 4b carb and a 305 had the filter in the carb. Some just have an inline filter. Looking to do a v8 S-10/S-15 swap myself, post up some picts!

I've got some pics, just not up right now. I'll try and post them today or tomorrow on my site.

Been doing some reading and looking at the truck. It's got a Quadrajet carb, not sure of the model numbers yet as I'm not out at the truck but I'll be picking up a carb rebuild kit tonight because I think the accelerator pump is screwed or leaking (hence the bogging off the line). I picked up a carburettor manual yesterday so it looks like I picked up another project and not just a work truck:(:)

Carb tuning? I think the first step involves sacrificing a goat? ;)

J/k sounds like a nice truck, +1 for pics! :thumb:

Ya my dad basically said the same: 'buy a new carb' when I asked if he knew anything about carb tuning. Same guy who's been running carbed bikes for 30+ years. He has fast cars when younger but wrecked them and I guess they just came/started fast, no work by him.

Think I'm going to make a hood scoop. Probably a reverse one for less rain in there.

Just have some fun.

Had 2 ranger before with 302's one carbed - ran ok and one fuely ran great.

Sold both to pay bills unfortunately and outgrew fords.

They are fun but a pain in the rain with no weight in the back.

Let me know if you want help with the carb....

Had a 305 in my 90 Caprice that was a turd, the car was heavy though. The 4.3 in my 90 S10 ran like a bat out of hell though. Truck was light. I surprised quite a few Mustangs.

Nice, I am doing a V8 swap into a 93 S10 and hope to 350 my 98 Jimmy one day.

As for the Q-jet, be very, very careful and take it slowly, they are not good to first timers and you can easily forget/bend something. I would honestly suggest taking it off and having someone you know rebuild it.

Installing an Edelbrock carb is an option but your looking at 2-4 hours of fab work to make it work plus it still needs tuning, I found they are really rich out of the box.

Most of the vac lines can be removed, with pics, I can easily help.

I hate to agree with Simon, but he is correct.....just kidding Simon.
Hopefully it is a regular Q-jet and not an electronic one(we have all seen dumber stuff). First one I did, car would idle but that was about it.

I doubt its electronic but I guess stranger things have happened.

Thanks, I think, :o

I wouldn't think so either, carb wise. Agreeing with you was a good thing...just being my usual wise-a$$ self.:thumb:

Sweet...it has the easy q-jet to rebuild. I'm not telling you what to do, but I would highly suggest making a brace for the back of the fan cover. Run it from the alt bracket up to the cover. Hate to see it bend down and hit the fan.:thumb:
I think it is in decent shape.:thumb:

You need to change that thing up a little, it says redneck all over it. Set of truck nuts, a roof visor, ans some diamond plate sidesteps and you will be set for some farm fun adventures.

Speaking of Truck Nutz:

The Florida Senate on Thursday passed an amendment to impose a $60 fine on Truck Nutz, one brand name for the novelty item on vehicle trailer hitches that resemble the dangling southern end of a northbound bull.

The proposal would make displaying bull genitalia reproductions on a vehicle subject to a $60 fine, moving violations and points against a driver license.

It has the elec choke that appears to be wired up...

The elec choke also has the wrong vac setup. It is a redneck truck and I'm a bit redneck so it works. Needs a bit of a lift and a setup in the back for towing.

You mean spread bore to square bore. Or is that what they call it up there?

Taylor, I said fab work for the trailer hitch and stuff like that. I'm not puttin another carb on if I can't get it to work.

Bore is the correct term black86glhs

you might want to watch the fan, looks like the clutch might be rubbing the radiator.

It's very close but still has clearance and the rad does not look like it's every had a run in with it.

Must be the picture then, looks like there is a ring on the radiator.

Radiator is good. Haven't rebuild the carb yet but pretty well as soon as I go pas 1/4 throttle, unless I'm double tapping it, it just shuts down the power like a serious lean or rich condition, should check the plugs. Is this most likely a bad float or accelerator pump?

Does it bog down or just crap out.. Sounds kind of like an Acc pump or fuel delivery issue but I've seen a whole lot of Qjets where people adjusted the springs for the air doors so loose that they flip open if you blow on em..

overlordsshadow

I'll check the air doors thing. I think it is the acc pump myself, but thats only from a week of having the truck and reading stuff about carbs on the net and talking to folks here.
